Floppy broccoli? Empty Floppy broccoli?

Post  BackyardBirdGardner 4/11/2011, 9:13 am

The winds and driving rains knocked my broccoli over yesterday. I'm sure the stems aren't broken, but they just aren't standing tall.

I can stake them, right? Or, does it even matter?

Absolutely try to stake them back up. Your broccoli will let you know if it can survive the damage.

I had a similar problem too the other night. The golf ball hail also tore holes all through my garden. Some were shredded Sad

I used heavy mulch to pack around the base and they stood back up again quite nicely.

Stakes of course will work also.

Thanks, guys.

Although, I guess what I am asking is do I NEED to stake them? If I just let them go, won't they still flower anyway?

You may not need to stake them. They may come back on their own. I would probably prop them up with a bit of soil or mulch to give them a bit of support. Kind of like when you use a pillow to support your lower back when it is hurting. If, after a day or two they are still lying down but not dead, staking might be necessary.

Best of luck.
