Attaching & Removing Grids

Almost ready to attach my grids to my boxes. Using redwood for the boxes and wood lath for the grids. Read that many take off the grids and store for the winter.

Question: What do you use to attach the wood lath? I was going to use screws but am concerned that by removing/replacing the screws, I will shorten the life of my redwood boxes.

Hello Susan, Redwood boxes are really nice. I don't blame you for not wanting to mess them up. I use a large staple gun to attach my grids to the sides of the box. I don't take mine off in the winter and we have some pretty nasty winters. There still are piles of snow around.

I'm sure others will chime in here and give you lots of input.

Hi,

I have made a bamboo grid yesterday. It is made out of the bamboo sticks they sell as plant supports. I just tied them together with some rope and layed it down on the ground in the box. (I have about 2 inch from the top of the box to the ground). I don't if this will work. Maybe the bigger plants will lift the grid from the ground.

I'm going to use clothesline and some wood screws to secure it.

Hi Susan,

I also thin wood lath for the grids, stapled/glued them together and painted them to last a bit longer. Mine are supposed to lay in the box, so they aren't attached to the sides. (if it weren't for the fact that I used outside measurements instead of inside...so at the moment they stick out a bit Attaching & Removing Grids Icon_biggrin

I'm planning on fixing that when the weather is better, so I can saw off the ends and repaint them. Needs to be a bit warmer/dryer wheater so the paint will dry before the end of the day)

my grids lay on top of my boxs and are of wood lath as well i drilled small pilot holes in the lath so as not to crack the fragil wood and then screwed them into my box as long as you line up the holes when your replaceing the grid and you do not over torque the screws everything should be fine i also marked the underside of my grids and boxs so i know which way things need ot be faceing

Make your grids longer to lay on top of the box, or shorter to lay inside on the soil. There's another current thread where somebody found plastic 'rivets' to secure grids to each other. It would be perfect to fold up and put away for the winter.
