Re: SESE has large potato onions for sale
I really am not going to be of any help I live in a totally different climate. My potato onions are growing great guns and bulbing from what I can tell on the surface. Mine wont be ready to pull for another month or so I suspect.

Re: SESE has large potato onions for sale
I'm over in Niceville. I planted my potato onions last fall. They did great over the winter and spring, and then the tops started dying down so I pulled them up. There were no large onions at all, just a cluster of shallot sized bulbs, 3 or 4 for each stalk. They are drying in my garage at present. I've cooked with a few, they smelled quite strong but the flavor was quite mild. I plan to replant some of the larger ones this fall and see how they do. I also planted a "Multiplier Onion" with about the same results. Nothing to jump and shout about but they were quite edible.

Celeste, drawing a line from where I am to Niceville, it looks as if we're at pretty much the same latitude. I would have been thrilled to get shallot sized bulbs ...picture a large 'green' onion and you'll know what I ended up with, lol.
Toying with the idea of trying them again this fall with a really beefed-up bed paying extra attention to early fertilization and being very particular with the watering schedule. It would be wonderful to have a long-storing onion AND planting stock each year!
Thanks for responding

Is this the type I should get
Visiting the SESE site and I think this it the correct type to order for in the fall.

If not, please send me to the correct type.
This is awesome - no more purchasing onions. If this works I will be able to supply my entire extended family - eventually.

When I pull my onions in July some of them usually still have green in their tops. I spread them out somewhere out of the sun where air will circulate around them until they finish drying. My grandmother used to spread hers out on a tarp under a big shade tree and turn them every day or so, but when I tried that the squirrels got mine. I spread mine out in the garage, instead.
After they are dry I store them in mesh bags until I replant in November or use them for eating.
I know this is an older thread but I have one quick question. My onions have been harvested and are finished curing. I am going to cut the leaves to about 3 inches from the bulbs. Do I then separate the clusters for storage or do I leave them together until I am ready to plant?

Yes you can cut the dried foliage about 1-2" from the bulb. Break them apart and save the largest for your planting next season.

Re: SESE has large potato onions for sale
Wonderful set of posts in this thread - even if somewhat old.
Encouraged me to visit Southern Exposure and order some sets.
My experience this season was with shallots and garlic from a grocery store - yes, they grew a bit. Onion sets from somewhere that also grew. Beginner's luck.
Next year should be much. much better

Anyone grow 3 inch potato onions?
SESE states that the average size is 3 inches. I planted mine and the average size is about an inch. I only had a couple larger than 2 inches. Has anyone done much better? I would like to hear from you.
