questions about lettuce and potatoes
I am getting ready to plant my first seeds this weekend and have a few questions. FYI - I am in the middle south region.
1) lettuce - do I need to start the seeds inside or out? We have about 10 weeks until the first frost.
2) potatoes - I have some purple potatoes left over from our regular summer garden. They have some small eyes on them, but I am not sure they are ready to cut and plant this fall. I did get some potatoes seeds, which I know I cannot plant outside now. But, can I plant them inside as a permanent place (i.e., not just for a transplant)?
Thanks for any input folks have. This forum has been such a resource as I get started!

Re: questions about lettuce and potatoes
Good morning Kristan!
I would plant your lettuce directly where you want them to grow.
I don't know the answer about your potatoes, but I can tell you that potatoes need a lot of root space, and the vines also can get big. Do you have room indoors for a plant at least 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall, if not bigger?

Thanks for the feedback Megan. Not sure the potato idea will work...wishful thinking I guess :-)

Re: questions about lettuce and potatoes
(BUMP) Does anyone know if sweet potatoes might work better for Kristan in an indoor situation? I have never grown them before, all I know is that they grow down from the top rather than up from the bottom.
Re: questions about lettuce and potatoes
Is the question about sweet potatoes? Not that it matters, since I don't have an answer!
You can try anything you want and see if it works. Any plant needs light, nutrients, temperature and water. Provide those and see what happens!

Re: questions about lettuce and potatoes
That would be an interesting experiment. I have no idea either but just might give it a try down in my laundry room this winter in a very large container that I have. I do have some grow lights so I could set it on a timer. Even if I just get enough little ones for one meal it would be a fun thing to try. Go for it. I will do it with you.

Re: questions about lettuce and potatoes
I might give it a go... there is a spot in our breakfast nook that would meet the light and space requirements. Will keep everyone posted if I give it a try :-)
