We've had a ton of rain and I haven't harvested my lettuce in a few days. Previously I had been filling a full family sized salad bowl every two days, but I've been lazy. Yesterday I headed out to see how things were going and I noticed that my salad squares had tons of mushrooms growing among them. I pulled all the mushrooms out but now I'm worried that the lettuce would not be edible. Would you still eat lettuce that was touching wild mushrooms? How did those darn things get in their anyway?

Do you think that my mels mix is still good to use?

Also, as I was cleaning up my boxes I ended up pulling up 3 potatoes!
They look beautiful but are harder than the store bought potatoes. I don't yet have any flowers on my potato plants, and the leaves are getting eaten up something awful. How do I know if the potatoes are ready for eating? As for right now I stuck them in a paper bag. Just seemed like the right thing to do other than sticking them back in the ground.

I too have had a number of wonderful looking mushrooms - one of my compost components is usually mushroom compost - salivating, I look at them and wonder if they are edible. Ihave no idea so knock them down and move on. I would think you could wash the lettuce and still eat them. That is what I would do anyway. Did you use mushroom compost? That could be the source... but fungi like to grow in moist areas and the spores could have come in with any of the compost sources if you haven't seen them growing elsewher in your yard.

As far as your potatoes go - eat them too. my spuds are way harder than the store bought ones, but they have probably been stored for months before they made it to the store. Mine have a huge moisture content in comparison when I grate them.

My potato plants had a relatively minor flea beetle problem (eggplants were apparently the saccrificial crop this year for the flea beetles) - and I must have missed the flowering of my plants. I dug mine up earlier this week when the plants seemed to die on me before flowering, and I was expecting no spuds, and got almost 20lb total - think that would be called a sucess. While this is not scientific at all, I would leave your plants till they start to die back and then dig them up. The good news is if you have 3 spuds, there WILL be more.

Wash your lettuce, and fingers crossed for your bumper crop of spuds/ they can be eaten at all sizes - when you harvest you will likely have some big ones, and some tiny ones.
