Eggplant
The only thing I have had a real disappointment with is eggplant. I planted from seed in three squares in two boxes at two different times and they have all sprouted, but the growth is agonizingly slow. The first I planted in April and the second on June 17th. I LOVE eggplant and am wondering if this is local or just me or perhaps the seeds are lacking - all from the same package.
Anyone out there getting decent eggplant?

Re: Eggplant
As far as I know eggplant, or aubergine, takes more than 4 months from seed, are very heavy feeders and like to drink a lot of water. They also like hot weather. Hang in there, if they are growing, there is hope.
Re: Eggplant
Hot weather I've got plenty of! I am going downstairs now to feed them (9:30 PM). I am going to add a side dressing of organic fertilizer ahead of the sprinklers tonight.
Re: Eggplant
I have twice fed and watered the eggplant since I got the head's up. Now my question is this: when I use fish emulsion and pour it from a jar into the watering can, then fill the can without splashing any on me, then water without splashing any on me how is it that I always end up smelling like fish? Deep thoughts.
Re: Eggplant
Well, my area and situation is different, but I bought starter seedlings for my eggplant and just harvested and made babaganoush from 4 asian varieties...yum. Good luck with yours.

Personally, I think some odors get 'stuck' in my nose for at least 24 hours. It's not fair that after a shower, vinegar rinse, and clean clothes, I can still smell the fish product, septic tank product, or 90 weight gear oil that I handled. Last month, I resorted to Vicks in my nose the day after working on my septic system.
I suppose the solution is a little Vicks in my nose before I start, but that never seems appealing at the time!

When I was a volunteer firefighter, thats one of things they did when going into a house that might have had some odor, they would put that under their nose to help. :-D

Re: Eggplant
I'm in Maine and my eggplants are slow. We're having some nice days in the high 80s, but our nites are the culprit. They can get as low as 51 thru mid 60s during the nites. Not conducive to growing eggplant quickly. I see one eggplant growing slowly on 3 of my plants, so its not very productive in my garden this year.
Here's a white Gretel eggplant.

It may be slow but it looks divine!quiltbea wrote:I'm in Maine and my eggplants are slow. Here's a white Gretel eggplant.
Re: Eggplant
I have added organic fertilizers and extra water to the eggplant a few times and I am seeing improvement. Maybe they would have gotten bigger anyway, but it had been a heck of a long time stagnating. Now all I need are flowers and fruits.

That's very interesting: my white Gretel has been very prolific, but it is producing long, slender eggplants, not the shape that yours looks to be. Huh!

Re: Eggplant
I have no idea when I should pick an eggplant. I've never grown them before and I don't eat them but I'm growing them for the family.
What size should they be before I pick them?
I have some that are dark purple balls and forget the variety.
I think its Rosa Bianca but they aren't bigger than a baseball right now.
Can anyone help me on when to harvest?

Thank you very much. I'm heading out to check the glossiness and indentation right now.
