I picked my first watermelon today!

I wasn't sure when to pick it, but I read somewhere on the forum to feel if it is lighter in weight than it looks like it would be,and that worked!
i wasn't a 50 pounder but it is good!

Have some cantaloupe growing too.

Awesome. I am growing those too, this is my first year every growing anything, so I am curious about the melons in general, do they produce 1 fruit per plant, or you can get more? I see those cantaloupes cascading off your trellises, and I assume those are several plants?
I planted four different varieties of melons to see which ones we'll like the most, and so far I have 1 melon on one plant, and plenty of the little embryo melons, but they are not growing.
As for watermelons, I have two plants, and each produced one fruit, the others are just embryos that aren't growing. Looks like they are waiting for their big brothers to be picked first.
Any ideas?

What variety of watermelon. I think I have a mini kind, but I am not sure! I will be ready to add a sling if they start getting too big! Beautiful, as usual. mini watermelon Icon_smile

Weedless:

Depending on the variety you can get up to 15 melons on one vine. I have 8 vines of two watermelon varieties and have many melons on them. One watermelon dropped to the ground when it got too heavy for the vine to support so I have pantyhose holding the next biggest and as the others get larger I will support them as well. The watermelon vines have outgrown the trellises and are now taking up the paths between the boxes. We are also growing cantaloupes vertical as well.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

I'm not sure what kind of mini watermelon it is,but I have just one vine and it has two watermelons on it,one is not as big as the one I picked, and it is heavy compared to the one I picked, someone said if it is lighter in weight it would be ready to pick and that worked for me!

The cantaloupe has about 6 on it,and it is just one vine too. I will make a sling for them as they get bigger.

Last year I grew both and the watermelons on the vine just died, but the cantaloupe did fine.

PS (middlemamma thanks!)
