Green beans question

So I picked my first few beans (bush) today. They tasted ok, nothing to rave about, but the texture is of concern. They were all curled up slighly, not straight, and kind of felt like cat's tongue on the outside, rough. After I cooked them, they weren't rough anymore, but I'd still say they were a bit too tough. The bushes look healthy and happy, and beans are popping up everywhere, but I am just wondering if I fed them something wrong, why are they so tough? They are not that long either, so I don't think I picked them too late... Any ideas?

My beans are doing that too... Shaped like a J and fat on the curved end with a big bean seed and skinny on the rest. Even steamed they are not crisp tender. They are the Blue Lake variety, supposed to be nice straight pods.

I do know that the rough outer texture is not unusual. As far as the rest of it, I am interested to hear what people say.

The first picking of my Roma II bush beans looked normal - long, straight, wide pods, (even though the plants had put out runners and I'm still not positive they are bush Romas.)

Every picking after that has been just as you described, short, curled, and wider at the stem end. I can't explain it, either. Had I not had that first normal picking I would have thought I had bad seed or something.

I don't think it's too unusual for beans to have a little "sticky" texture, although Blue Lakes are usually less likely for that than some other varieties.

It's a strange, strange year in our gardens.
