I bought a package of Edamame seeds to try and wasn't sure about the spacing. Unlike "normal" bush bean, these get 2-3' high (bush beans only get 1-1/2' tall. So I wasn't sure if I should still put 9 in a square.

Has anyone else planted these? How close to you plant them?

I grew them last year and I planted 9 per square. The package I bought contained only enough for four squares ( http://www.reneesgarden.com/ ). They did very well despite the fact that a deer lopped off the tops of all of them! They grew back and still produced very well.

I love edamame, especially in stir-fry and salads...but after shelling them and seeing the the amount I got, I decided I might be better off buying them frozen! Let me know how it goes for you and maybe I'll change my mind. :-)

Thanks for the advice. Do these have one major harvest like other bush beans? I had extra space and someone recommended them. If they are mostly one harvest, I might stagger my planting times.

I will certainly let you know how it goes!

Unlike bush beans where you might get two to three "pickin's", you'll only get one harvest with edamame. Pull the plants up and remove the pods. That was the easy part! I might have gotten more without the deer damage, but out of four squares I got less than 2 cups of beans.

Here is one of my favorite edamame recipes:
