Soybean
Hello everyone!
I planted my soybean seeds a few weeks ago and nothing and I mean nothing is coming up!??
Unfortunately I was unable to purchase any soybean innoculant unless I purchase a large enough quantity to fill NJ! Is it possible that is why they are not coming up? Does it take awhile to come up? I planted my bush beans the same time and they are already growing....
Any advice is welcome.....Tks..

Re: Soybean
I didn't use inoculant either and I think 34 of my 36 soybean plants (Butterbean edamame) have come up! They came up pretty fast too - I planted them directly in the ground on May 6th and my notes say the vermiculite pockets they were in were "bubbling" already on the 11th as the seedlings pushed up. Today they're about 3" tall and working on second sets of leaves. Granted, we're in So Cal so it's nice and warm here.
Hope they come up soon!!

Re: Soybean
Short answer, no. I never hear of it until recently and my relatives have been growing soybeans for all my life.
They do like warm weather is all I can offer. Only planted mine a few days ago, so nothing up yet.

Re: Soybean
Soybeans need warm soil to germinate and take a while to get going. The innoculant has nothing to do with germination. For this area (zone 5a-6a) I usually wait until the first week of June. Last year my soybeans were starting to emerge just fine when we hit a week of cold, rainy weather in June. Once the cold rain started, no further beans emerged and all I got was what made it up before the rain (and because of the small number of seeds in the packet I purchased I had nothing to replant with). Have you encountered cold, wet conditions since you planted?

Re: Soybean
Hi Dave:
Yes, we had alot of rain last week for 3 days but it has not been cold, I guess low 70's and mid 70's. Maybe you are right I planted too soon for here. I wasn't sure when to plant so I planted them the weekend before Mother's Day along with my Zucchini, butternut squash, tomatoes, peppers, bush beans, pole bean which are all doing fine.( I usually plant on Mother's Day but I was away for the weekend).
Should I try to planting new seeds tom? Tks!

Re: Soybean
Dunkinjean,
Soybeans do take longer than bush beans to germinate, so you might want to give them another week or so. But if you have the seed and decide to re-plant, you still have plenty of time to do so and still get a crop. My problem was the seed packets I bought didn't have enough seed to replant. I'm going to think big in the future when I buy soybean seed.

They sure do - one of my favorite foods! My 11 year old son loves edamame too, so I planted 36 of them.
