SFG Update for June
We’ve had a few Canadians post updates of their gardens here and in other forums, but I’m hoping we can get the Canada forum rocking. So, let’s show everyone else what all of us Canadians are made of! How is your SFG doing in June?
I’ll start off with an update on my SFG:
My broccoli in the 2 front corners is doing well. The one on the right is obviously doing better. The broccoli on the right front corner was transplanted from my sister-in-laws SFG. The one I had planted there died. I'm not sure why.
In the front centre square are my carrots. They are getting quite tall. I think I may have a little peek just beneath the soils surface in the next few days to see how they're doing.
Behind the broccoli and carrots are my lettuces and spinach. As you can see the spinach is just about done. I harvested some of the spinach and leaf lettuce last week for a salad. Yummy! The spinach is a little leggy now and it started to bolt. So, out it will come. The leaf lettuce is recovering nicely from the harvest and I may get at least one more harvest out of it I think. Those little head lettuces you see on the left are called mini buttercrunch lettuce. I was able to squeeze 6 in a square because they are so small. I will harvest these in the next couple of days.
Here are the red onions. I have two squares of those. The stalks are getting so tall.
One square of bush beans. I actually only got 7 out of 9 seeds planted. The other 2 didn't come up. I'm sure I'll still get a bunch of beans, so I'm happy.
This is my eggplant. I'm not sure if you can see, but I have 2 flowers on it. They are just below the top set of leaves near the main stem. I've read that you need a female and male flower in order for the plant to bear fruit. I'll have to do more research on that now that I have some buds on my eggplant.
Here I have a square of beets. There are Detroit Dark Reds, Early Wonders and Chiogga (sp?). I couldn't decide which variety to try, so I planted all three!
And this is a baby bird that decided to leave it's nest as I was out taking pictures of my SFG for you all. He even posed for this picture before he hopped/flew out of the tree!
Well, that's my update for June. We'd love to see everyone else's garden updates!
