Cross pollination in SFG? Since the plants are so close together does cross pollination happen more often?

Yes, definitely. Tomatoes, for example need to be at least 10' apart to prevent cross pollination. Corn at least 200'. I am growing heirloom tomatoes, and plan to save the seed for three of them, so those are in ornamental beds where they are separated. Beans only need to be 3-4' apart, so my heirloom beans are separated by growing them at opposite ends of the bed or just one to a bed. Took a bit of planning for the trellised beans.

This only becomes an issue if someone is keeping seed from year to year, but folks doing that would have done their homework and planted accordingly.

I'll let you know. I have a lot of volunteer tomatoes. If they get big enough to identify, it will be fun to see if they are anything I recognize. (I know I had a lot of heirlooms last year, but I don't remember if they were all heirlooms...this year they all are. Ever have problems with cross pollination in SFG?? 601593 )
