Anti-pesto presto?

I am thinking of attaching hoops of pvc pipes to my boxes and covering them with bird netting. The question is how to hold the netting down.
Attaching it to hoops will still leave some gaps for chipmunks to go through, and I do plan on detaching the net now and then.
So here is my thinking. I was going to make a long (16 ft) sleeve made of weather proof fabric, and fill it with sand. Then cover the hoops with net, and hold the net down to the ground with those sand "sausages". They will be heavy for chipmunks or squirrels to get under, and are easily removable for garden work. What do you guys think? Go, no go?

It sounds like it would be very effective. (she says as she hurries out to her garden to see what she has that could do the same thing!)

It sounds workable and worth a try.

I use 1x2s screwed to the box boards face to sandwich plastic or netting. Cheap and easy, but not as convenient as your idea.

I've seen waterproof sleeves like you're talking about that are filled with water to hold down outdoor curtains -- see camping supply stores.

Your idea would be cheaper but if you see these things at flea markets, they are great and easily stored once water is let out.

Maybe even use zip lock bags of water????

What about the water bags used to hold down swimming pool covers in the winter? They come in 8 foot lengths (I think).

all great ideas guys, I"ll look for those to price them up. If too pricey, I'll make my own. After upholstering chairs, making sleeves doesn't sound bad Smile

I pounded a bunch of finishing nails into the sides of each of our boxes, and we hook/unhook the netting from those when we need to poke around inside the box. It may well be possible for the resident urban squirrels to find a way in, but they haven't as of yet, and neither have my Evil Cats. Before that, I was using bricks to pin down the edges of the netting--I like the nails much better.

I liked the swimming pool tubes idea. Never had a pool, so didn't know about those. I found a six-pack of 8 ft long single tubes for 26 bucks. This seems like a decent option, I am gonna give it a try. I also like the water tube idea over sand, because I can empty them out and put them up for winter. Thanks for your suggestions!
