Heirloom seeds

Im not one to go for the hybrid seeds that are sold localy at lowes and home depot etc so i did some searchingand found this site all they sell is heirloom seeds no hybrids and to me the taste is that much sweeter

Thanks for the good lead. I'm going to check it out. I've found heirloom seeds at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. www.monticello.org We visited one year and I bought seeds then. Since then I get them through their catalog.

Just wanted to mention that I ordered some of my seeds from Baker's Creek (rareseeds.com). They have a ton of cool tomato varieties especially. I got Stupice and Break of Day and they sent me Henderson Pink Ponderosas for free. I also got a watermelon variety that is apparently rare now. They were by far the fastest to deliver. I got my peppers from Reimers and a mix of other stuff from RH Shumway. Both took a full week longer to send me my stuff. Also, Reimers does not include any planting info on their packs. You have to relook them up online.

mcckr3441--Hopefully, this year will be a good year to start "deadheading" and collecting your seeds for next year....I get alot of pleasure from doing this and then sharing seeds with anyone who is interested in them.....It's so much fun to collect the seeds and then replant the following year...you'll have your own "heirloom" seeds soon enough..... good luck!

Hi Margaret, I've been a seed saver too for a long time. I have so many seeds from last year. My neighbor had a brunch for the local ladies last Saturday and we all exchanged seeds. I gave away so many cleome seeds and I still have enough to cover the earth! You are right, sharing the seeds is fun. I had nicotianna and cosmos, too. Picked up some veggies and dahlias.

Sometimes I stop growing a flower and have no more seeds when I get interested in that plant again. Then I have to go back to Montecello! Kghouston, above, mentioned that Reimers doesn't include planting info. Unfortunately, neither does Montecello Heirloom seeds Icon_neutral

Hi...I tried nicotiana,but no success...as far as not knowing what to do with seeds, i just throw them into the ground and hope for the best, but aren't we lucky we have the internet so we can look up seed identification!!!!...I picked up a really interesting old seed book from a garage sale and every now and then i leaf thru it and find something interesting.!!!!enjoy the day, off to work(ugh) I'd rather be looking at seed catalogs!

I bought my heirloom seeds from http://www.realseeds.co.uk/. They specialize in varieties that grow well in the UK climate, and that have good flavour. Their seeds come with instructions about how to save your own seeds, and they have a lot of info on their website too.

This year I have 3 Heirloom Tomatoes, a Chinese/snow pea, and broccoli.

Mine come from all over but there is a sweet little heirloom seed seller on one of the San Juan Islands off the Washington Coast. They don't even have a website. Fun.

I too enjoy the flavor of heirlooms over most hybrids. I get my seeds from:

mw4d... I just can't get enough of these. I did have to try two or three times last year to get them to germinate but once they did they went like gangbusters. I had them in Mel's Mix in pots. I had so many that I was giving pots of full grown plants away to anyone who would take them!

The look so good scattered around the yard. Try again. You'll love them and if you have the tall night-scented ones as these are, they have such a wonderful scent in the evening. We try to keep some near us on the deck.

mckr:...i'm soo jealous...they look lovely...i bet they would be nice in our yard...we have a huge yard, fenced in of course, because of all the deer...we live in a log cabin and the deer really take over, but the enclosed yard is about 3/4 of an acrea, maybe an acrea...but we have beds and they sure would look nice...i'm going to again try now that i see what i'm missing..thanks for sharing the photo!..m

Hi...that would be soo nice, BUT it will be a very long ride..i'm down by the Jersey Shore!!!!!(long beach island area)...that's very sweet of you...i've looked on line for some seeds, so perhaps i'll purchase some...thanks again....

Oh,no! two more tomato seed sources of which I was previously unaware! Someone above mentioned stupice tomatoes,I just planted them today for the first time ever.

I got 6 different heirloom tomato varieties from www.wintersown.org free -- just sent a SASE envelope. They also have a mixed veggie pack. Also there is a person on the Homesteading forum (http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/) giving away tomato and bean seeds just for postage. He sent me 6 different beans since I already had a bunch of tomato seed sprouting. My problem is going to be growing them all since I want to try every variety. I thought 87 squares was overkill, but now I'm running out of room! Heirloom seeds Icon_smile

I've bought seeds from seedsavers.org and burgess. I've tried the brandywine, stupice, cherokee purple, mortgage lifter and a few other heirloom tomaotes.

However, there is one hybrid tomato that I love, which is the Park's Whopper. I can usually get those as transplants from our local stores.

My next seed purchase will probably be from rareseeds.com

Anyone have any good vine squash varities?

I only grew one stupice plant and production wasn't too great. It produced medium sized tomatoes that were ok... I need to grow some more of them to get a better evaluation, since the first plant didn't do too well.

Now I had a ton of Mortgage Lifters, Parks Whoppers, Cherokee Purples, Dr. Carolyn and Elfin/Sprite tomatoes that were all very good. At the risk of raising the ire of the SFG police :suspect: I too will be growing some tomatoes in Earth Boxes this year. I LOVE tomatoes and am planting 9 varieties this year. 6 plants will be in my SFG growing in the Mel's Mix. 4 others will be in the two Earth Boxes I just ordered. I'm anxious to do a side by side comparison and see which yields better results. It get's HOT here in Texas and providing enough water to the tomatoes to allow them to thrive but not so much they'll crack can be a challenge.

....Mmmmm, guess I miscounted. That's 12 plants and a 11 varieties. Hope my neighbors like tomatoes as much as I do. Laughing

All of these are heirloom varieties grown from transplants. Here's hoping for good tomato weather!

Have you grown the green zebras before? Do they make good fried green tomatoes? :-)

Orange Banana sounds good... I'm wanting to try Kellogg's Breakfast which is an orange type of tomato.

You sound like me, I just keep adding more tomato plants to grow. I can't stop at just a few. lol

I tried green zebra a few years back in a container on the patio at a former home. We went out of town for summer vacation in early June and when we returned tomato horn worms had eaten 80% of the plant. Sad

So... I never even got to taste 'em. ... Yes, I dream about working at the TomatoFest farm in California. They grow 500 varieties. Talk about tomato heaven!
