Hello from Northern Utah!
Hello All! Not sure if I am in the right thread to introduce myself and not sure how much of an introduction everyone cares to read so here goes: My family and I live in Syracuse, Utah and have a teeny-tiny lot so Mel's method is perfect for us. We are beginners to gardening; although my parents had a huge garden when I was growing up.
Wish we had come across Mel's book before but better late than never. If there are any of you in my neck of the woods, where do you get your peat moss & vermiculite?
My husband is busy on building a cedar 4x4 box for me; so I am hoping to still plant some lettuce, maybe cabbage & radishes.
Looking forward to learning with you and from you,
thank you so much
Susan

Re: Hello from Northern Utah!
Welcome swpost12! Glad you found us, and so happy to hear you have read Mel’s book—he truly is the father of this movement.
I have ordered my vermiculite from Amazon the last couple times. Extra coarse. Comes from PVP. Compost is hard to get the recommended 5 different versions….
I use worm castings, my own kitchen/garden/yard stuff, chicken poo (commercial) blood and bone meals…like I said.
In the Midwest, we are in the midst of heavy garden production! Can’t wait to hear more from you on this journey.

Re: Hello from Northern Utah!
Thank you Scorpio Rising! I appreciate the warm welcome and the Amazon tip. I want to do my own composting too; thinking about one of those drums that turns. Heard some mixed reviews on those though; I just don't have the space to put a composting pile in my yard. I'll have to research worm castings. Yeah, I am late to the party this year but maybe it's a good time for some trial & error work so that I am better prepared come next spring.
Thank you again, and happy harvesting to you & yours

Re: Hello from Northern Utah!
Welcome to the forum from SW Ohio, SWPost! Glad to see you here. Sounds like you are ready to go. The more you are able to get done this fall, the better prepared you will be ready for next Spring's planting.

Re: Hello from Northern Utah!
Hi, Susan. Welcome to the Forum from California. Getting your garden and Mel's Mix underway now will mean you can try out some late season crops. You have a short growing season that you can extend a bit at both ends with mini-green houses of PVC and plastic sheeting on a couple of beds. Lettuce, radishes, beets, kale, small carrots?
You are in the Western Mountains and High Plains Region. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/f16-western-mountains-high-plains
If you set up your beds now, try to get some arborist wood chips to cover the aisles. Wood chips help keep the weeds at a minimum and allow you to walk around the beds during the rain/light snow times.
Sourcing real composts (not soil amendment, bedding mix, etc.) is something to do right now. Store extra composts for next spring and fall amending. Store off the ground and covered, like with a blue tarp.
Farm Tek also has coarse and super coarse vermiculite in stock. https://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/search?searchQuery=vermiculite
Peat moss should be available at big box stores and some nurseries. You want 100 peat moss in a compressed bale. You will fluff it up, measure 1 unit and then get it really wet before mixing the Mel's Mix. Yes it will shrink some when wet but fluff up once in the MM. It's just tedious to get wet again if the MM is allowed to dry out.
