Patio Tomatoes at the Kitchen Door
Last fall when I picked up my seed order, they gave me a sample package of "Patio Tomato" seeds. This spring I decided to plant a couple of the seeds in pots on the back doorstep, just outside the kitchen door. They have not only been very productive, but they are quite decorative with the green & red tomatoes with the white Sweet Alyssum. It is nice being able to step outside the door and pick a couple ripe tomatoes to slice into the salad for dinner.

Nice! I planted a variety named Candyland this year—very tiny, almost jellybean sized red super sweet cherry. Delicate plant, I think it would be ideal on the patio next year because the fruits are so small they are almost hard to pick. Very pretty though!

I just picked ‘em all or I would have put a picture up!

Anyone else have back door patio tomatoes? Or, even herbs?

They were from Urban Farmer.

I grew all but a few on my deck this year. I learned some lessons...but over all the experience was very good. My deck is not large and I think a lot of my plants were too crowded so I had disease issues at the end of the year but I still have production on tomatoes, beans and a zucchini. Poor lonely little zucchini...I have to play bee with it.sanderson wrote:Anyone else have back door patio tomatoes? Or, even herbs?
My onions were amazing, kale was pretty good and leeks are still growing well. I replanted lettuce and added carrots and spinach. Beets, for some reason just don't grow well for me.

I am considering adding in more raised beds next year. My current raised bed has asparagus in it which I will be harvesting for the first time next spring. Currently also has green beans in it.

I grew several dwarf tomatoes. They didn’t get more than 4 feet tall. I might have gotten they from southern seed exchange, or victory heirloom seeds

I think I really need dwarf tomatoes. The Brandywines were just too big.

I’m out of town. I’ll check my seed packets when I get home to see where I got them. The is a whole project to develop more varieties.

My Yellow Brandywine tomatoes have grown 2 feet taller than their 7 foot tomato cages. But then, so have the the Sun Gold and Golden Jubilee tomatoes. The Patio Tomatoes (seeds I got from Urban Farmer) never got over 2 ft tall.

Re: Patio Tomatoes at the Kitchen Door
I think Snow Fairy is a good patio tomato that is very prolific. Throughout September, I have been heavily pruning the lower parts and allowing the 1, 2 or 3 fresh stems to continue growing now that the temps are down in the 80s and 90s. The photo is from June 3, 2021, and they are about 2' tall. Now they are around 3' tall.
