Sweet 100 tomato photos anyone??? Empty Sweet 100 tomato photos anyone???

Post  milaneyjane 5/21/2010, 10:45 pm

I went to the store tonight to pick up a few plants and got a 6 pack of sweet 100's for a $1. I was only going to plant one but thought maybe I could squeeze two in my garden since I had six at my disposal. But now I wonder if it will be too much. Does anyone have a photo of the sweet 100's growing from last year? I have two of them spaced about 18 inches apart along the edge of a box and then a roma 18 inches from that. I was planning on trellising the sweet 100's and I use a tall cage for the roma. Too much, too close? Sweet 100 tomato photos anyone??? 601593

I have 3 planted, two are rooted suckers from the first one. I have 2 too many. :-)

No photos, but they bear like crazy. The one I have is full of tomatoes and blooms, and about 4 ft tall.

6 for a $1 is quite a deal milaneyjane. I think your spacing is fine. I've got 2 Sweet 100's in the ground this year. I didn't plant them last year so I don't have any pics for you. Both are covered in green tomatoes. The temps are already getting hot in Dallas - we hit 92 yesterday - so I suspect they'll start shooting up any day now.

Okay, not sweet 100's, but a cherry tomato question -- What is a suitable container size for a cherry tomato? I have an extra plant and no more squares, and I really want to try this variety.

If we can put a tomato plant in a square foot, couldnt we put a tomato plant in a container the size or bigger of a square foot ?

Just thinking

The Sweet 100 makes a great patio container plant. Get a nice tall stake. Very Happy

What I've got is a rareseeds.com Black Cherry. I have had trouble staking tomatoes in the past... tried the bamboo tipi trick and ended up winding it round and round with cord to try to create something for the tomatoes to lean on. (I have a regular trellis planned for my SFG tomatoes.)

I always grow Sweet 100 but I don't have a photo. Mine are not very tall so far this year do to cool weather.
The size of the fruit has nothing to do with the size the plant will get. I plant mine one foot apart and trellis them. If I was growing in a pot I would use a pot the size of a 5 gallon bucket because the roots are not able to spread as they can in a Square Foot Garden.
A tomato can either be vining (indeterminate) or bush (determinate). Many paste tomatoes are bush. Indeterminate tomato plants grow until frost and can get 8 feet or so tall. Determinate grow to a certain height and then stop so they get usually 4 feet at most although it depends on the variety.
Sweet 100 is an indeterminate.

Thanks everyone. I had to laugh because the six pack was a dollar and a few cents, but a single plant slightly larger in a 3 inch pot was $4.88.

I am going to keep the three tomato plants in a row and see how it goes. Thankfully I have a neighbor who I can share left over plants that I don't put in the garden. But I always have that urge to plant "just a few more", LOL!

Thanks Leon---your plants look fabulous!!
