Re: N&C Midwest—October 2020
What a gorgeous day! Cleaned out 3 beds; harvested all the Tango celery--amazing taste! So sweet and tasty, plus the outer pithy stalks made nice compost. Also thinned chard, pulled out dead cukes and cleaned off and stored trellises.
Amended 3 beds, one ready for garlic soon, and the cold frame ready to try some late season 20 day radishes! Might sprinkle in some mache too, I love that stuff and I haven't tried it in my cold frame yet!
Peppers and maters still hanging on despite cold temps at night--supposed to warm a bit this week.
Haven't seen a hummingbird in about 10 days, I did clean and change the nectar Wednesday, but this will come down next weekend if I don't see any migrators this week! Then suet goes up!

Fall Rains
Rained all day yesterday, and most of the night. It finally quit around 5:00am. Combined rainfall for yesterday and last night was 2.25". The local weather person said we no longer considered in drought for this year. It is just now starting to drizzle again, and more rain is coming over the next 2 or 3 days.

Yes, we had quite a drenched up here as well! Cool, dreary. Warming up next couple days just in time to cool down for the weekend.
Only herbs left outside are thyme and rosemary. My rosemary is in a container that is too large to bring in; thyme over winters outside. Might have to start over with a smaller rosemary plant. Not enough room in my houseplant area!
Hope to get some things into cold frame; got my “Four Season Harvest” book out by Coleman to jog the memory! Excited to give it a go! Need to get the Fordhook Swiss chard out—too tall. The others (bright lights) are OK.

We had rain today, but yesterday a snow squall.. and snow on Sunday morning upon waking.. Glad I put the row cover on the table top planter and over "patio greenhouse" .. eggplants and peppers are in my apartment as they have small fruits on them.

Cold here today....picked some Swiss chard for my mushroom and wild rice soup. It was amazing!
Other than that, not much going on out there! Next up; garlic planting! Probably next weekend.

I haven’t been very “on it” this year—no fall plantings except for the garlic. I suppose I could try some mache in the cold frame...I just don’t think anything will germinate out there...might have to germinate in here.nrstooge wrote:We are to have our 3rd snow tonight.. Re: N&C Midwest—October 2020
Not that I am ready for spring, or anything, but today I started some Glaskin's Perpetual Rhubarb seeds under the grow lights. Want them to be at about 6 months of growth when they are transplanted into the garden next spring. Did that this past spring with two plants, and it worked wonderfully, so I am going to try to get four more planted next spring.

Re: N&C Midwest—October 2020
Through last night and today we got a total of 2.5" of rain from tropical storm Zeta. With the extremely dry summer we have had we need the rain, but it would be nice if it were spread out over a little more time. Fortunately, all of the beds are ready for winter, and there aren't any gardening chores except still harvesting the kale and spinach.

Same—got a bunch of rain from the remnants of Zeta...Cold here!
Went out tonight and closed cold frame. Picked all peppers, a few maters, and the last 2 beets. Chopped Swiss chard down so the cold frame can close!
Will get out there in the next week or so to do final clean up. Hope to get the garlic planted! Supposed to be clear tomorrow?

Re: N&C Midwest—October 2020
So all beds cleaned out. A couple of my old legacy beds are compromised—will repurpose the MM into other beds. That little project will wait until spring!
Closed the cold frame after broadcast seeding some mache, will see if it germinates!
Still have some Swiss chard in the cold frame, too.
Trick or treat here tonight....I am somewhat surprised they are still doing it. Will distance myself, no real need to meet any kids face to face.
