Transplanting Strawberries
I have a 4x4 bed full, actually OVERFULL, of strawberries. They do not produce very well and I think that is due to the overcrowding. I would like to thin them down to 1 per square. The ones I pull up I would like to transplant in the ground so they don't go to waste.
When is the best time to transplant them or do they not do well when transplanted?

Re: Transplanting Strawberries
Treat your strawberries as Bi annual plants ..( they fruit every second season ) split the plants and re site the splits elsewhere lest you get strawberry root sawfly laying their eggs in the roots . A lot of gardeners say cut the flowers off the newly planted strawbs so they get really strong roots for a good crop in that second year .
Next year split of a few more plants from stock in the new bed to get your second strawberry bed going . Then it is a case of always move the old bed at the end of the second years fruiting season .
It works the same when you're using tubs of strawberries too.
