N&C Midwest October Winding Up 2019
Wow, this fall fell hard! Still super hot for us here...might get a break this weekend. I knowI have cherry maters and peppers out there. My work schedule has interfered with my tending to the boxes!
My garlic came from Pinetree! Will plant in a few weeks

So, cleaned my houseplants that have been outside for the summer off with peppermint Castile soap solution and then hosed off/watered them. All indoors now for the seasons until next year!
Going to be 40* tonight. Plan to pick lots of peppers and maters this weekend. Also, a co-worker gave me a big bag of apples, so I will give applesauce canning a try! YUM!
Last year I made and froze unstuffed pepper casserole and it worked great—a nice taste of summer in the midst of the dark bleak!
Hope the applesauce is great! Love it!

Oh wow...fall is here! Love it!
Made and canned 3 quarts of applesauce from a variety of apples...almost as much in the pitch pile as the keep pile! I’m glad they weren’t sprayed. And free!
Picked a ton of peppers. Will be making and freezing the unstuffed casserole for the winter!

Free is always great. I should try canning applesauce this fall. It seems a lot of people do it.
Re: N&C Midwest October Winding Up 2019
It was really easy. If I had better apples, it would have been a breeze! Most of the work was the prep of the apples..still worth it! My first so we will see!sanderson wrote:Free is always great. I should try canning applesauce this fall. It seems a lot of people do it.
I have a ton of jalapeños from someone at work, and I am going to make Cowboy Candy (Pinterest) this weekend! Will post the recipe! Love my jalapeños!

Made the candied jalapeños! Smelled great! Post on recipes! Weather now FALL! Over night . Sunny and nice. Need to put up other peppers, will probably freeze a bunch of Unstuffed Pepper Casserole. It holds well. I add the cheese when I bake it.
Lots of peppers out there still, and a few tomatoes. Got my garlic from Pinetree. Will plant before Halloween!

Frost Warning!
Well, it is mid-October...frost warning for tonight. I went out and picked all the big maters and peppers. One lone eggplant was out there...
It’s over. I did cover the pepper bed with sheets but most of that won’t have a chance to get big enough to harvest.
Good run!

Re: N&C Midwest October Winding Up 2019
Yep, heavy frost has brought this year's gardening to a halt for the most part. The frost hardy plants, such as Kale, Spinach, and Chard are still going strong, but that's it. I'm late getting the cold frame set up for the some winter lettuce, radishes, and spinach, but might get that done tomorrow or Saturday. This weekend is supposed to be back up into the 70's, so it will be a good time to get all of the beds ready for winter.
Never plant without a bucket of compost at your side.
Re: N&C Midwest October Winding Up 2019
Today I pulled the Carrots & Beets, refreshed the bed with fresh compost, and sowed the winter cover crop on it. The Danvers Half Long carrots did not have enough time to fully mature -- this was the 3rd succession planting of them -- but they make great Candied Baby Carrots for dinner. Some of the beets will be pickled, and some of them will be canned for winter eating.

I agree, OG, lovely weather this weekend. I am done, there are a few tiny peppers out there. I will clean all tomatoes & eggplant out. Might take a chance on the peppers?

So. Cleaned nothing out. Still sort of mild? You never know what will happen!

Raining cats and dogs over much of our region according to the NOAA radar. We did need the rain, I guess. I still have some peppers and a few tomato plants out there, peppers might have a shot.
Only thing I have left to plant is garlic, and I might try to put in some mache. It can take anything!

Re: N&C Midwest October Winding Up 2019
So, gonna get a hard freeze on Halloween, so went out with my garden dog in tow and picked the small remaining peppers, and 4 small green tomatoes! Fried green tomatoes this weekend!!!
Pretty good run, after a slow start and wet one too...
Anybody still have things growing?

The gardens are about done, SR, and the only things I have still growing are Kale, Chard, and Spinach. All of the rest of the raised beds are under cover crops until spring. The cold frame has radishes (had the first ones today), lettuce, and spinach as well.

That is fun OG. I have a 4x4 cold frame in my garage now for a year almost..OhioGardener wrote:The gardens are about done, SR, and the only things I have still growing are Kale, Chard, and Spinach. I really need to be intentional about it’s placement....
