excited to be here!
I am still reading through Mel's book and came to the site for more tips and tricks. I look forward to learning more and interacting with fellow gardeners. I don't have a lot of gardening experience other than helping a family member with an unmanageable and marginally successful garden. I got tired of seeing it get over run with weeds year after year and barely harvesting anything that was planted. I decided to plant my own garden this year - I'm starting small, with the items I know my family will consume without fail, and my ultimate goal is to plant enough to can/freeze in years to come.

Hi Jeb, Welcome to the Forum from Central California. It sounds like you are doing things right, starting small and growing what your family likes. And, you are reading the book! All New Square Foot Gardening is so much easier than row gardening. As you are still a little ways out from gardening in your area, you have some time to source the ingredients for the Mel's Mix. It's all about the compost.
Re: excited to be here!
Hi Jeb! Glad you found us! It is just the best time of the year to get into SFGing! So many possibilities, and then, there are the veggies....tomatoes anyone? Or lettuce, or radishes, or...well, you name it. I have done traditional gardening and you are right, by the depth of July-August, when things are getting ready to harvest, my “garden” was a weed patch with choked out cultivars...
I think you might be in my Region, so come over ot N&C Midwest and check in, we all struggle with the same weather, pests, etc. Glad to see you! Can’t wait to hear your plans!

Welcome!
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Hi Jeb! Small is the best way to start. Depending on what you're preserving, don't forget about dehydrating as an option, along side canning/freezing.
