Fourth Year SFG in Canada

Monday morning harvest in the photo  There were more beans and a couple of potatoes harvested in the afternoon. This evening we got a severe thunderstorm with very heavy rain. For only the second time in 31 years we got rain water coming into the basement. Will be interesting to see how the SFG made out.

Tuesday morning harvest includes two spaghetti squash, two green peppers, one banana pepper and of course the never ending yellow wax beans and rattlesnake beans. Unfortunately the Spaghetti Squash plant has succumbed to the Squash Vine Borer. 

SVB? Oh, no! Will you have to eat the spaghetti squash soon?

The squash have been hanging on the vine for quite some time and the outer skin is hard. So I think they will store ok for a while. However, we will probably eat one in the next few days.

So far I've lost two plants to SVB. I'm hoping they do not like Canada Crookneck.

Harvesting continues. Took my first eggplant today. Lots of different and colourful tomatoes. Beans and white scallop squash are still producing well.

I made an experimental stir fry lunch today using mostly ingredients from the garden. I am not much of a chef so I was not sure how it would turn out. Started by cooking up onions,  a variety of tomatoes, and fresh basil to make a sauce. This was then set aside. Next I stir fried thin sliced white scallop squash and some green pepper slices. That also was set aside while I stir fried kale and collard leaves. While the greens we're cooking I cracked open two eggs and stirred them into the greens along with some mushrooms. When finished I put the greens/eggs on one side of the plates, the squash/pepper on the other side of the plates, and poured the sauce on top. Finally I added an edible nasturtium flowers on top. Except for the mushrooms, eggs and virgin olive oil, everything came from our veggie garden. It turned out to be quite tasty. After eating her portion Mrs TD rightly suggested that next time I should add some grated cheese on top. Personally I would add a little sliced up hot peppers from the garden as well but she would not like it.

Lost another zucchini plant to squash vine borer. This one was not in my SFG but in a straw bale.

Some may remember the Canada Crookneck I started indoors from saved seeds during the Winter. It got planted out behind the compost bins in the Spring.  It looked like it was going to die but it managed to cling on. Now it is using the cedar hedge as a trellis and it has a CC on it. Hopefully it is pollinated.

A few days ago I removed a Spaghetti Squash plant that was killed by Squash Vine Borer. The plant had two fruit that we brought into the house. This morning my wife noticed frass next to the squash. Sure enough one of the squash had a SVB grub in the two inches of stem still attached to it. The squash looks to be ok inside. But on the second squash the grub actually got inside it. Yeuk.

Bringing together some things harvested over the past few days. Missing from the  photo are the beans. Plus photos of Mrs TD's pride and joy.

The potatoes in the photo were harvested today from one Yukon Gold Potato plant (there are many more). These weigh in at 2 lbs 5 oz or just over 1 kg. They we're grown in a lasagna bed that was started last Fall by putting cardboard on top of the lawn then building up layers of greens (e.g. grass clippings) and browns (e.g. shredded leaves) to height of about 3 feet. The layers composted down to produce a rich growing medium which requires no tilling. The bed is now an old style (no MM) SFG bed with a grid.

TD, you and Mrs. TD, make a great team.  The potatoes look gorgeous as well.  
How is the weather your way?  A little cooler here, we did not have two days of 41C, only one. Thunderstorm in our forecast.

KJ wow 41C.  Nice day here with 27C and lower than usual humidity. Over the past couple of weeks we have had some much needed rain (sometimes record setting) and even a tornado warning here in Ottawa. There are still  a lot of forest fires in Ontario.

There are many fires in B.C. as well, and lots of smoke around.  Some people I know are really badly affected by it.

Mrs. TD's flowers are breath taking.

So jealous of the patty pans!  I had one plant, white scallop, and it looked great.  Apparently while we were on a long weekend in New Orleans, some bad nasty weather came along and snapped it clean off at the root.  Sadness ensued.  So it is now down to the heretofore never grown Delicata, that I have no idea of when to pick!!!!!

SR look at the size of this white scallop squash that I found hiding under leaves that are 20 inches across.

Harvested potatoes again today from my Lasagna Garden bed that was started in the Autumn if 2017 and which was converted to Old Style SFG in 2018. Seed potatoes were planted Spring 2018. These are from just one Yukon Gold seed potato. They weigh in at 2 lbs 13 oz or 1.3 kg. That is a new record for me from one seed potato.

That happened to me this year for the first time ever.  Never knew they went into the squash fruits, too!
