Grow Produce from Produce!

My latest experiment is growing new crops from grocery store produce. It took 3 years to get a pineapple that way, but it worked. Now I'm doing it with sweet potatoes. Next will be onions and celery. Next month I'll start red potatoes. Anybody else doing this? I just dug a little deeper and discovered I can do it with romaine lettuce and bok choy, too. I can also regrow carrot tops for the rabbit. I don't think the avocado pit idea would be worth it, however. I read we can regrow turnips. Anybody try that? I am really jazzed about this since we're facing yet another 10 days of blistering heat, so now I have a new indoor gardening project to get me through it. Rolling Eyes

Raided the produce dept of my fridge and found romaine, celery, and carrots. The carrot tops will be for Frankie (rabbit). The romaine (right) will be for salads. The celery (left) will be to plant out in September. It feels good to be doing something instead of just sitting in the a/c. Razz

I'm currently (sort) of doing this with potatoes. I've done this with green onions, lettuce, and celery before.

However celery is infamously finicky. I'm not in a position (locale) to do pineapples, so I'll have to pass on that.

Reminds me, I need to repot my aloe vera.

I tried romaine last year and failed, but I really need a July/August garden project, so I'm going to try again. I would love to get a head start on celery, but I've never tried it before, so it may not work. At least it doesn't cost anything to try.

It's been almost 2 weeks.

The romaine still looks viable but hasn't done anything, yet.

The celery looks great, but only has one stringy root, so I'm going to leave it a little longer.

The carrots are a disappointment. They're way too slow to grow for rabbit snacks, but then the alternative is compost, so maybe I'll keep going.

The front dish is a Walla Walla onion bottom. It's the 2nd one I've tried. I read to soak them over night then plant them in dirt with the tops buried. I just planted the first one. This one will go into the ground, tomorrow. We'll see. Rolling Eyes

The verdict is in! Carrots and romaine aren't worth the effort. Celery is a real winner. geek

Agree. Celery is the only one I do anymore.

Sweet potatoes are amazing. I have 7 big, healthy plants from one sweet potato. I also gave 3 more away and I could have pulled at least a dozen more from the mama.

I planted 2 Walla Walla stumplings and one of those is up, too. cheers
