Onion question re: central Ohio
I'm working on my learning curve and would like to fill in the blanks regarding growing onions in central Ohio. Can someone help? warning, I have little knowledge..
The onions I'm interested in are the big yellow ones and red onions too.
The garden gets at least 12 hours sun, some areas over 13 hours.
If my online research is correct(?) I should use long day onion seeds which should have already been planted indoors by November.
It's nearly mid December so I guess I should buy transplants in very early Spring and could plant about 9 or 16 per square with the option to pull smaller onions for immediate use and let the others grow large.
Any of this sound correct? I looked around online and our forum at the 110 topics on onions and I'm still not sure what to do. So any help out there? Your comments here would be terrific. Thanks! p.s. This is what I'm after, this is my store bought onions made into French onion soup. Would love to make large batches and freeze.

Try this, LM:

I did a google search for onions in the south... I'd say try "onions in the mid-wes.t"

Thanks, LM, because I grew 3 of 16 green bunching onions from seed started in Feb. and was very disappointed...thought sets are my only option...we'll see!

Re: Onion question re: central Ohio
I have always grown onions from sets purchased at local garden centers; so not with a great deal of forethought or planning. While they have done well, they take up a lot of space for a long time. I would plant in April and they would be ready for harvest usually late July, so for the yield in my space they take up a lot for a long time. But if you have the space (which I remember you have more than I do) and are willing to have it occupied that long, go for it.

I will have some space if I get myself in gear building boxes! I think I would try sets, my germination rate was crappy on the seeds!herblover wrote:I have always grown onions from sets purchased at local garden centers; so not with a great deal of forethought or planning.
