Garlic - Fall garden push Empty Fall garden push

Post  Cajun Cappy 10/25/2016, 10:52 am

past weekend and up till now we have been hard at it doing our garden push. It is unseasonably hot and this put us late and we are kinda worried what the winter may bring.  Got the 4 x12 box mucked out spaded fertilized with organic stuff and compost then added some miricle grow garden soil that was on sale at Lowes and have it raked and ready to plant same with Peggy's 4x6 herb garden and she almost has every thing planted,  The garden box is under construction and we plan to go from 4x4 to 4x6.  the current box is 15 years old and beginning to rot.  naturally a full report with pictures and videos will follow but in the mean time its out to wack up the last of 8 palliates I scored for free that will keep our lil fire pit going for quite a while.

Garlic - Fall garden push Empty Garlic Box Expansion

Post  Cajun Cappy 10/26/2016, 5:44 pm

Got the 4x4 15 year old box off and took it apart what didn't fall apart drug it off by the fire pit for a ceremonial fire that ole box was a herb garden strawberry patch and who knows what till last years garlic try.  Built the 4x6 replacement box out of heavy oak 2x12's.  Moved it in position standing up and leaned it over and let it plop in place was heavy hard work mixed in with the other garden chores so we quit for the day.  Time to cook and have a few cool ones. Feels like it too Sanderson.  We got the last 4x4 box built we kinda do over kill.  We use galvenized cornering hard ware and 12 3 inch screws and 50 1 1/4 inch screws in the corners of one box.  We have them both built and in place and we wacked up the old partially rotten boards from the old garlic box to burn in the fire pit.  Now the drills saws and saw horses and such are all put away and next is to fill and plant the new garlic bed.  We plan to do a picture and video filled post of the whole thing but we far from done.

As the dew dries this morning we have parsnips that have been soaking they are a last minute substitution on our 4x12 box an experiment.  We aint ever growed em before.  Once planted that box is complete and we will picture it.  Then we plant the garlic bed which has grown to 4x6.  Then we place the blue berry box and line it with card board fill it with pete and transfer the blue berries thats as far ahead as I wanna think at this stage.

HAPPY SATURDAY YALL!!

Cappy. This is my first year growing parsnips and I almost gave up on them. Thought they'd NEVER come up. They take a Lonnnnnng time to germinate and they are slow growing. I planted mine around the 1st week in may and their now about the size of a small carrot.
I think about 120 days to maturity.

The tops will really bush out so you may have to thin them later. I had never eaten parsnips so before I planted some, I had my wife buy some and cook them. I was blown away the sweet
cinnamon taste. My grandson said, " Grandpa, they taste like grandma's pumpkin pie"..

Parsnips will not sweeten up until after a few frosts hit them.  Good luck with them.

Thanks we hope for the best with no expectations.  We were gonna plant brocoli in that patch but couldn't find any that looked good and Peg had the seeds so we figured why not.

Got the garlic planted in its new box only thing left to do is the blue berry box.  The box is built but not inplace and filled yet.  Today we lit our first fire in the fire pit and are getting ready to light the BBQ pit.  Music on the out door speakers and our huge patio fan going could be cooler but what the heck cant spend our lives waiting on fall so we are pretending. I am a huge fan of the blues and a horrible harmonica player so like us Cajuns say brought ya self down.  Just call first cause we camp alot this time of year.

The dang asparagus is sprouting again.  We cut it back mulched it and put it to bed for the winter last week.  Now there are 8 shoots sticking up in the 4x4 bed.  GRRRRRR!!! hard to be mad at it though  Laughing

Cappy
It's a great time of year for those of us in the deep south. We've been getting the beds ready ourselves. Had the first fire last week and camping later this week with the smokingmeatsforum group in Sebring. More of a Jimmy Buffet fan here though.
Good luck with those parsnip.
