Sounds like beets!
Well, at least it will give you several opportunities to get a good one going.

If I understand it correctly, what I viewed as a seed is really a seed pod. I think most are supposed to contain 3 seeds, which does correlate to my current results.
The next time my wife eats one, I'll crack the thing in the middle open just to verify.
Re: Secret Mango Project
I've added "Get a mango" to the shopping list from the village vegetable market. Since they are a little out of season, it's going to be hit or miss. Once one is acquired, I'll dry out the core and use a Dremmel tool to do an autopsy.

I'd love to know how the secret mango project is coming along!

Wish I had better news, but it's been depressing.
Every evening for months I'd go and water the mango. It's twin was kept at home as a backup.
Just when I was gaining confidence that this would work, someone dug it up.
At least they didn't rip it up. Looks like someone wanted a mango tree.
I waited several months before planting the twin. This time instead of marking it to avoid trampling, I hid it in the growing foliage and put assorting rocks and concrete around it to try to avoid accidents.
Things went ok for a few months. Then someone went in, removed everything from the planter, except for my tree, and planted another mango tree about a foot away from mine.
That new one next to mine wasn't doing well. It died and another one got planted.
Then someone dug mine up.
I've got several seeds and plan to start some more mangoes soon. If the newest tree dies, I'll try to slip one in next to it. I'm also thinking of adding a laminated message asking anyone who wants a mango tree to contact me instead of digging the new one up.

That's really weird.

Thanks for the update! Not great news, but it makes for a great story. That's just crazy. Guess maybe there are other escaped lunatics in the area

Re: Secret Mango Project
Lunatic, crazy story. How can someone just up and steal what was obviously someone's tree. Good to hear from you.
Re: Secret Mango Project
Sooooo busy with everything. Thanks to photobucket, I have to rehost ALL my blog images and even the smiley in my sig. Just started uploads to a new site and fixed that first. You can either be pleased to get the first image from the new image host I'm using or else be annoyed that I used the SFG forum as guinea pigs.
In other news, 3 mango seeds from the ancient trees have been planted. The one from last year took forever to sprout, so I think we're going to be waiting a month or two (or three) to see how they do. My existing roof mangoes (of indeterminate lineage) are looking happy.
