Good year for melons
Not for growing them here in SoCal for me, but a good year for buying them.
I've been pleasantly surprised at how tasty big box store melons are this year. Not to mention, cheaper than dirt.
Cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, casaba, all have been really good and not only sweeter, but much richer and deep in taste. Probably the best year in at least the last ten, IMO. Maybe the wicked heat or maybe the water restrictions, I do not know, but at $3 for a basketball size watermelon and 99 cents for a cantaloupe other than subsidies, I have no idea how they even ship them to the store for that.
The only down side is any other melon expensive, most 99 cents/ pound.

I'm finding the same deals here, too. Which is great because it very difficult for me to grow melons in my area. We just aren't hot enough for long enough.

I know, CC. I bought 3 specific cultivars for the north. Hope I get the chance to see if they hold true....

Re: Good year for melons
OK, 2nd year for these:
Minnesota Midget, Pinetree Seeds: mini musk melon, cantaloupe extroidinainere
Sakatas Sweet: Honeydew type but small and you eat the rind..delish
Blactail Mountain and SUn and Moon Watermelon
And new Charentaois classic French musk melon! Hoping it is super sweet!
All on the South Annex, containers, up against a dark red brick wall...heat, sometimes we need it, and sometimes we dont.

Re: Good year for melons
SR ... from the seeds you sent me I've got one Sakata Sweet plant (small seeds from Pinetree) and another plant from the large seeds. Were the large seeds also a form of Sakata? I had a failed attempt at starting more of the Sakata Sweet small seeds. It's probably too late but I may try again. There is nothing wrong with the seeds you sent me. They sprout 100% but I had a transplanting issue.Scorpio Rising wrote:OK, 2nd year for these:
