Potatoes - Wind and potatoes Empty Wind and potatoes

Post  killjug 5/11/2010, 11:10 am

The wind yesterday broke of all but 2 of my 8 potatoe plants. I went ahead and dug them up and ended up with about 2 1/2 pounds of new potatoes. I was thinking about starting more this weekend in a large planter. Would this work to get an other small harvest later this year?

BUMMER! No
Sorry to hear about the 'taters. They are cool weather plants so I don't know if you'd get anything if you planted new ones right now. ...but you won't know for sure if you don't try.
Do nothing = no potatoes
Plant and they don't grow because of the heat = no potatoes
Plant and they happen to grow = potatoes
Seems you have a 1 in 3 chance.

However, if you like sweet potatoes... they love the heat and would be fine to plant now.

+1 for Tim's advice-just because you might get some. To be honest, I didn't realize taters were a cool weather crop. Guess that's why they do well here blush

Could you plant potatoes and then a quick growing plant on top?

If you planted seed potatoes and they didn't sprout, in your climate would they last in the ground until the next go around. When I harvest I always miss some; they sprout in the spring before I even plant my seed potatoes.
