Re: Butterfly Junction
Tomorrow starts my 2018 gardening season! This morning, I bundled up and took the camera out for a sneak peek (it was 37 degrees). Here is my first ANSFG bed, planted in Daikon radishes, globe radishes, and carrots -- from last fall. Tomorrow I'll harvest and see what's edible. (That's Sienna, photo-bombing. )
Re: Butterfly Junction
It seems like "good" cats try to walk on the frames instead of in the Mix. Good kitty.

. . . but I've never seen so many hummingbirds and butterflies.countrynaturals wrote: is kicking my butt!
Re: Butterfly Junction
Hubby has been asking me to grow California poppies for almost 40 years. I could never get them to grow (which is really embarrassing, since they're almost a weed, here). Last year, I planted a bee garden on a stump out back. The seed mix obviously contained CA poppies, since that area is now loaded with them. This is what I saw this morning, naturally re-seeded from last year, with no help (or interference) from me. YEE-HAH!

Here's the downside of cold composting. Every place I've used my compost this year, I'm getting a healthy crop of cucumber sprouts. Since I am psychologically unable to pull out a volunteer, this is what I'm getting all over the garden.
Re: Butterfly Junction
You know if you have a warmth loving plant like cucumber sprouting all over, it is past time to get all your seedlings planted. You can give the babies a light cover so they do not sun burn.

I got my strawberries planted today. Tomorrow and Monday it's supposed to be cold and rainy, but Tuesday I'll start planting everything else.Turan wrote:You know if you have a warmth loving plant like cucumber sprouting all over, it is past time to get all your seedlings planted. Wish I had this problem. My compost volunteers are all squashes & maters.countrynaturals wrote:

New Land!
We open escrow on the new land, Monday! I did a search on manzanita for sale and discovered there really is a market for it, so I guess I'll be starting a new biz, soon. Here are the before pics. The previous owners dumped a bunch of junk on it, so cleanup will be a royal pain. My favorite thing about it is the game trail right down the middle. That must be where our deer come and go.
Re: Butterfly Junction
Congratulations! Now you will have plenty of scope for your butterfly sanctuary!

Pipevine Swallowtail Caterpillars
Here's a reminder of why my gardens are called "Butterfly Junction." My Dutchman's Pipe is thriving and covered in caterpillars. YEE-HAH!

Re: Butterfly Junction
I'm researching bees and just found this.
I have tons of wood ash left over from winter. Maybe it's time to make a "bee-bath."The USDA recommends also creating a damp salt lick for bees in the yard. This is where you create a damp spot in the yard and mix a bit of table salt or wood ash into the wet soil.
Re: Butterfly Junction
No summer garden this year. Involved in 3 real estate deals -- one of them major -- can't keep up. All I want to do is go back to bed.
Re: Butterfly Junction
Yeah, but one of them has a pool and it's right next door. YEE-HAH!sanderson wrote:Just when the deals close, I'm afraid real summer will be here.

Re: Butterfly Junction
From what I can see you have lots of garden already growing. A friend of mine in Arizona takes summers off from hte garden, just too hot, and is time to for her to travel.
I hope your real estate dealings work out well.
Enjoy that swimming pool
