Camp, your garlic is always so nice and clean and white. Mine are never white like that, even after being cured and peeled. Do you rinse yours?

NHG, I planted the pears 2 springs ago. I don't know how old they were but they were at least five feet tall and grew to over 6 feet tall by the end of the season. One is Anjou and one is Bartlett. I would love an Asian pear but I have not seen them in the nurseries around here. Do you have to have two of them?

Perfect overcast day for planting out potted annuals that I grew from seed. Now if the slugs would just keep their mouths off them. The pine needles don't seem to work well with slugs but I have some builders sand. Maybe I'll try sprinkling some of that around. The beer traps are filling up so fast that I'm going to go broke buying beer.

Thank you all for letting me know that what is going on in my vegetable patch isn't unique or a disaster. I appreciate knowing that just because some people have to give away zucchini, some don't get enough eggplants or peppers. It's not my brown thumb.

The weather having been on a roller-coaster doesn't help.

Armed with a couple of tiny watercolor brushes this morning, I found all the female zucchini flowers either past their prime or furled up tightly, while the male cucumber flowers were MIA. Try again daily.

As far as the beer, I quit that long ago because they were drinking better than I was. Just made me more mad at them. LOL. This summer I've just been letting them do their thing. I think the slugs are a little lower in number this year, maybe due to resident garter snake or vole/mole, don't know.

The strawberries are about over now. I picked yesterday but they were on the overripe side for the most part. I think the last rain did them in, and I wasn't able to get out there and pick before that rain. But I did get a lot of strawberries this year, one made a pie, 3 gallon bags in the freezer, I'm set to make preserves hopefully today, and I have some in the fridge.

NHG, I think all your slugs are vacationing on Cape Cod... at my house!

Looks like I should get a Shinko pear. They aren't taking orders now so I'll try to remember next March to order one. It doesn't say how tall they get. Do you know?

The Cali white soft necks is harvested. The hard neck has a week or two until harvest.

as soon as I lift the garlic I let it dry on the bed about an hour to let the dirt dry and then peel it. You have to peel it when the membranes are still soft and moist.

I'm not sure! I planted mine 10' apart, I think that was in the directions, so I'd be surprised if a mature was greater than 15' high. Hmm. Anyway, if you do order, try to order in January instead of March, because they run out. (They ship in April)

camprn, which fair are you talking about? The Deerfield Fair? That judge is great. He's in my club, and probably others too.

I can no longer post pictures on this forum. Is anyone else having problems?
Anyway, I bagged a few of my tomatoes this morning so I can save seeds. I wanted to show pix of a couple.
I've bagged Mountain Gold (I think this one is OP), Red Zebra, Li'l Pink, and Romeo Roma this year. All are later toms so they didn't form buds til yesterday and today.
Enjoy your day today. Here we are having higher temps, probably around 80 later, and sunny.
I'm heading to my blog now to post said pictures.

Well, that's a shame. It never bothered me before since I could always post pictures even with Win-8. I'm used to posting pictures of my garden and crops I would hate for that to stop. Explanations are much better with photos.

I thought my strawberries were done. But it was just wishful thinking. I picked another spaghetti strainer full today. It's hard work picking strawberries!

I want to make preserves in the breadmaker, but the whole canning process is making me a little nervous. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get brave enough to try it.

More scapes were snapped off today and went into the freezer. The peas will need to be picked tomorrow.

Ooh. Tomorrow's lunch will be sauteed kale, peas, scapes, and walking onions in coconut oil. With bread & butter. I'm hungry.

Thanks NH. Those two look pretty good, but you should see the Brandywine and the Gilbertie. They are both being devoured by one disease or another.
