We picked 14 banana peppers, 6 grape tomatoes, 3 roma tomatoes, and one Cherokee purple tomato this morning.  Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for our family members, neither my sweet dear wife nor I eat nightshades, so my brother and sister-in-law will be mildly surprised when they return home later today and find a gift basket on their porch.

Our Mortgage Lifters are covered in large green fruit, and thanks to Youtuber Reaganite 71 and his brilliant idea, the birds have left the large fruits alone.

His idea is to hang red plastic Christmas ornaments on the plants before the tomatoes start to ripen.  The birds peck on the ornaments and then leave the plant alone.  If it would only work on the squirrels and chipmunks, but they have opposition now that we have a 7-foot long rat snake that looks like it had Barry Bonds for a personal trainer.

That Christmas ornament idea is a fun one ... I will have to try that sometime.

Wow first tomatoes and peppers already? Around here we are encouraged not to plant until after Mother's day, which was just a couple weeks ago. Some of us plant 4th of July tomatoes, the name for an actual tomato plant, and hope like heck to get tomatoes that early. But you're way ahead of our curve!
