I can see a little lawn peeking out from under the snow, so I'm thinking about gardening. Keen to hear everyone's tales and experiences with SFG - we have a moderately well drained clay-based soil on top of limestone (Zone 5b), so the amended soil we'll put in the top will be a big improvement.

Eventually I'm hoping to get some garden projects started farther North - anyone here garden in Zones 4 or 3?

glad you\'re here jebailey happy hi

Jane, as you are in Ontario, come on over to the Canadian Regional thread when you have time.

That doesn't mean that you cannot comment on any thread you like.  It is a wonderful place to be here on SFG, so many lovely people.

Are you a beginner SFGer? I consider myself one although I have been doing it for several years now but there is always something to learn.  Any questions and you will be guided in the right direction. We love answering questions, and if possible, seeing pictures.

welcome from South Dakota, Jane!

Jane

I garden in zone 4, and only 20 miles away a friend of mine gardens in zone 3. It is amazing how just a few miles can make such a difference. I get an entire month longer season than she does, as my last frost date is usually 2 weeks earlier and my first frost date is about 2 weeks later. For veggie crops the zone won't matter, because zones reflect how low your winter temps are, but if you are doing any permanents, such as fruit trees, landscaping, berries (vines, canes, bushes) that have to stay in-ground all year, knowing how cold cold can get is a MUST!!! I am a transplant from California happy sunshine , and I sure do miss all the wild blackberries very sad that grow EVERYWHERE out there. Never thought of them as delicate until moving to -25. lots o The main thing to keep in mind is how long your growing season actually lasts, and how warm (or not) your summers get. That will help you determine the varieties to grow. For us, we need LONG day onions and SHORT season tomatoes! Hello from Ontario 1666079590
