Has anyone ever grown watermelons on a trellis? I know it is doable theoretically, just wondering what your experiences are.

Thanks!

A couple of years ago, I grew a watermelon plant in a container with a wooden trellis. As the melon grew, I supported it with a cloth sling tied to the trellis. It was interesting because the plant produced a few melons early on, but only one of them grew to full size. The others died off as if all the energy was going to the one melon.

The first year I ever planted watermelons the vines went crazy and grew up into a coil of wire fencing nearby. I didn't think I was getting anything and just let them go until I noticed a melon in the foilage. Turned the coil of fence over so I could see inside it (it was 6 foot fencing and I am 4' 10") and there were 6 melons hiding inside, all safe and sound. Last year I put my melons in my little swimming pool and they grew very well. Also had some planted in the dirt bags because I ran out of room and they did equally well and produced melons. This year I put 2 melons in a dirt bag and put it on the lowest shelf of a bakers rack on my patio, hoping to use the upper shelves to support the melons. I'm standing gaurd with a shotgun and the first white fly I see is history Watermelon on trellis Icon_exclaim

Did the melons themselves have support? They didn't tear off the vine of their own weight?

They were the sugar baby type. Small and round and were not supported. None of them tore loose of their own accord but the same couldn't be said of any larger variety.
