New to SFG in Middle TN
I'm new to SFG, I've been reading about it for a couple of years, but never was brave enough to change my methods that were working at the time. We relocated from So. Calif, to Middle TN about 9mo ago and my feeble attempt at a garden was disappointing to say the least. Trying to settle into a new area, not knowing what resources were available and trying to work with an area that hadn't been gardened in years didn't help and my growing season here is about 160 days shorter than where I came from. I have a great supply of composted chicken manure, a single rabbit (hopefully more this year) who gives me a moderate supply of fertilizer and a great desire to once again grow all of our own veggies. I'm hoping to learn a lot here.

Welcome Ladasa. 160's days shorter is a big adjustment. But there are great people on this forum that are close to your temp zone and can give wonderful advice.

My mother in law was a fantastic gardener just outside of Knoxville, TN. She used to always talk about the Univ of Tenn (UT) and the help they gave her in her gardening. I suspect she meant a local extension agent helped her so I feel sure that the state should have a great wealth of information for your locale thru UT.

Welcome, welcome Ladasa! I am also a transplant to the south. My family and I are originally from Los Angeles. We will have been here 10 years come October. It is indeed an adjustment and I empathize with you very much. However, I can say that when we go back "home" to visit, we find that we don't care for it any longer. We prefer being in Georgia. Of course, that is not true when it comes to weather and southern allergens.
Since my area is nothing but red clay... well the thought of gardening was daunting to say the least. Truly, SFG is one of only methods that made sense here. I began SFG gardening here Feb 2013, and I tremendously enjoy it.
Again welcome. Here there are many decades long gardeners who are sure to guide you if you have any questions. I wish you much success!

Ladasa, Welcome to the Forum from California! The great thing about All New Square Foot Gardening is that you do not use any native soil/dirt. Only 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 fluffed peat moss and 1/3 5-source compost. Check your Craig's list for local sources of compost. I looked in the Knoxville area and this compost caught my eye. Looks like there are nice sources for making your own compost, also.
