What do you all think. Is it better put partially composted materials into the worm bin? Or just dump whatever is in the kitchen into thier bin.

I'm thinking partially composted because it is easier for the worms to munch through. Also, egg shells are softened, coffee grinds are starting to neutralize.

Sincerely,

Stephen

Anything will do eventually, as nature takes its course. But lots of people like freezing and/or microwaving their worm scraps first, to kill invisible bug eggs, seeds, fungi, etc. And also because freezing bursts cell walls so scraps decompose and become available to the worms faster. Microwaving can turn hard food that would take a while to decompose into slush, too. I like to freeze my stuff, but I usually run out of freezer room and can't do it.

As for egg shells, I bake them first, to help kill off smell that attracts our dogs and other wild critters, then usually pulverize them by putting them into a plastic bag and folding and crushing them, sometimes stomping them. I've gone as far as trying to grind them, etc., but at a certain point I get fed up and have had enough, so I call it a day and move on.

I tend to spread my eggshells all over the place rather than focus them on the few worms I recently got as a present. Here in the PNW, soils can sometimes lack calcium due to heavy rains washing it out, leading to things like blossom end rot. It can take a very long time to become available to plants, so I'm putting it in regularly instead of bottlenecking it anywhere.

Re coffee grounds, I may scatter a few around my greens here and there, but usually they go into my compost pile and may get a slight sprinkling into Mel's Mix.

Steve, There's more than one way to feed a worm. Very Happy I usually freeze scraps, then microwave what I need for the feeding, add corn meal, used coffee, wet whole wheat pieces and some water and dump the sloppy mess in.

Steve,
Fresh waste will simply take longer to break down so the worms can use it.  I feed primarily frozen then defrosted scraps plus any fresh cut up scraps on hand on the day I'm feeding them.  Also, since my winter outside food sources will freeze into frozen blocks, I keep a couple of buckets with tight lids stored in the basement, one has leaves and leaf mold, one has aged manure, one has compost. Some of that gets mixed into everything else I mentioned.  At times I add ground egg shells and azomite.
You can be as simple or elaborate as you want.  If you keep a very thick layer of shredded paper on top (perhaps a good 10 inches) I think it prevents hatched out flying bugs from escaping off your fresh food scraps- That's been my experience.
Here is an excellent site for worms--

Down here in semi tropical soggy South Louisiana to atract worms all ya gotta do is pile up a pile of stuff like leaves rotting stuff anything almost.  The worms like the ants in another post look for high ground to get out of our unusually hing water table.  They hang out in my pile of scraps and are there year round.  every planter box is full of them.  Here is what I do with them.
