Mels mix ingredients
hi ,
here in the Uk you're more likely to get rocking horse manure thann the moss peat mels suggests due to the massive depeletion of many many ancient peat bog habitats for creepie crawlies andetc.
The Eco Warriors and Green Taliban have virtually had it made illegal for the general public to obtain it as most of the extraction sites are now classed as places of Special Scientific Interest and not allowed to be exploited upon pain of death or similar
What is readily available is imported commercially composted coconut fibres , not a patch on real peat I suspect due to varuous reasons .
Do any of you know if such composted coconut fibres are any use as a substitute for the basic 1/3 moss peat element of Mels mix ?

There are several ads that have discussed this. I did a search for coconut and came up with these:

Re: Mels mix ingredients
Many thanks Lindacol,
being failry new here I'm still ploughing my way through the threads and didn't think to search for such titles in the search due to the vocerifous digs that I was not a squarefoot gardener because I'd been using Mels original book of 1981 and run with , don't fight nature if it works for you .
I'll have a good read
David

Plantoid, you might like the following video from a fellow Brit even though it is a couple of years old. He is one of the guys who got me excited about this kind of gardening. He also talks briefly about the peat problem in this video. You might enjoy his comments.
On a side note, I am sorry that you were treated like a troll. I only really know one of the people involved, that person is generally an amazing and kind person. I find that it helps me to calm down when I go out and get dirty.
To better days and understanding.

No probs Debs,
Everyone has to start in a forum somewhere , it was just that the goal posts had been moved without me knowing it.
I have a new hymn sheet ordered so hopefully will soon be singing from the same hymn sheets as most on here
Thanks for the Youtube clip.
