I have been growing Prisma shallots from sets for a few years. I grew them from seed one season and replanted the bulbs that fall. I plant my shallots the same time and same way as I plant garlic. The only issue with growing from bulbs is they are more prone to bolting. I have been told that fall planted shallots are more prone to bolting than spring planted but I have not found it to be true. Spring planted shallots from bulbs bolted as much as fall planted. The only difference is everything happens later when spring planting. Planting my garlic shallots ans multiplier onions in the fall frees up a lot of time during the busy spring planting season and means I don't need to store my seed stock through the winter. I store a small amount in case of a crop failure so I can rebuild stocks if necessary.

Thanks for that 9H. I never thought to start shallots and multiplier onions in the Fall. I still have a few multiplier onions in the refrigerator that I harvested from the SFG. I'm wondering if they will grow if I plant them in the SFG at this time of the year. Maybe worth a try.

Hello 9huskies. Welcome from Atlanta, GA!

I used to have 4 huskies...

Sounds like you have a good plan. Looking forward to seeing/hearing about your garden!
