Hello all, I am Brady I am new here and new to sq foot gardening. I plan to put in a small raised garden this next weekend for a few things this year and next year step it up. My goal is to produce the majority of my own food within the next couple of years. My basic plan at this point is to use the sq foot garden out side during spring summer and fall for most veggies and have an indoor hydro system for year round greens and herbs, but that wont be until this fall most likely or in spring. I have some stuff going in planters and pots now but I am going to use this idea/concept to get some other veggies this year. I grew up with a garden out back because my parents and grandparents had plenty of space to grow stuff. growing up I would say 75% of our food came in from garden, even beef was raised by my dad.

I am open to any suggestions or ideas.

Thanks Brady

Welcome Brady. I'm new to not only SFG but to gardening period! This is my first year.
I, too would like to be able to produce the majority of our vegetables.
I see canning in my future. Sounds like you have some experience already. I'm sure that will help.  happy hi

Brady, Welcome to the Forum!  glad you\'re here  Using the special mix, called Mel's Mix, in raised beds is a fun and easy way to have a garden. Hopefully, you have a copy of All New Square Foot Gardening, 1st or 2nd Edition, by Mel Bartholomew. There are several members in the Carolinas.

My opinion -- The book is terrific to properly learn All the solid basics and add in your own notes and refer to it often.  Long afterwards you'll find yourself going back realizing you missed little tidbits (or forgot) here and there.

The forum is really fun as it kind of explodes outward in many directions enhancing the book in my opinion and exploring/teaching topics beyond the book.  This is due to friendly folks from all over sharing a lot of knowledge. Still, do your own research too!

Welcome and enjoy.
