Potatoes - Down pour coming to Middle South - Should I tarp my container potatoes? Empty Down pour coming to Middle South - Should I tarp my container potatoes?

Post  Windmere 5/14/2014, 5:52 pm

The rain has just begun here in Georgia.  Our area is expecting 1 - 2 inches rain (per Weather Channel).   Dumb me watered my potatoes in containers yesterday.  They are in a base of MM and then I gradually put straw over them as the stalks grew.  The stalks are all the way to the top right now.  My concern is mildew/mold/fungus.   My instinct was to tarp them just now... was that a good idea?

Much thanks for any comments.  Smile

Potatoes - Down pour coming to Middle South - Should I tarp my container potatoes? Empty Downpour and container potatoes

Hi Windmere,

I'm in your climate zone and we had the exact same situation here earlier this week.  It rained early last week, then I watered lightly over the weekend when I topped-up the bags, and then it rained again yesterday.

I didn't cover and the potatoes seem to be fine.

Gloria, you need to get in touch with Better Homes and Gardens or Organic Gardening.  Your gorgeous layout is an inspiration!  Oh, and I ended up tarping last night (I Hadn't seen you post).  Anyway, potatoes looked fine.  It probably made no difference.
