Re: How many swiss chard per square?
I plant 2 per square, and harvest for cut and come again.
If allowed to grow without harvesting/pruning, one plant can fill up a square.

Thanks. Even though they are of the spinach persuasion, I knew 4-per would be too many. I'll try a square or two with two, and a couple with just one.

Re: How many swiss chard per square?
One year, I foolishly planted 9 per square, and they grew to be huge!
Currently, I plant 4 per square, which is plenty. Two would, however, suffice.

Re: How many swiss chard per square?
I can do 3 to a square if I keep them cut a lot and small leaves. But I deal with 2 to a square much better.

Re: How many swiss chard per square?
The school garden I volunteer at has them 3 or 4 per square. They probably self-seeded from the previous year or a kid spilled too many seeds in one place. They're growing just great. But they have started to get in each other's way, and we're seeing a little wilt that may be caused by some of their leaves being pushed up against each other and the high humidity created by them being packed so close. It might work perfectly if you did it that way on purpose, so long as you picked the leaves regularly to give plants breathing room.
But it would probably be easier to just plant less densely.

I tried 4 per sq last year but they got to be too much so this year its 2 per square for me. I'll harvest them from the outside as needed, not the whole plant.

Re: How many swiss chard per square?
I have a 15 month old Ruby chard that fills the whole square+. I plant 4 / square for cut and grow if they are only for a short season. Two is probably a good compromise.
Re: How many swiss chard per square?
I usually plant 3 per square and that works well for me.

If you like swiss chard I put 4 Fordhook Giants in a square. It'll keep your dinner plates busy. P.s, I like it sautéed with a little olive oil, little butter, and garlic, then sprinkled with grated cheese, yum!
