A Geezer Joining Empty A Geezer Joining

Post  rabbithutch 2/8/2014, 9:52 pm

I bought the book about 35+ years ago but never really tried to follow it too closely.  After a number of years not really gardening but growing patio plants in containers, I am now ready to try my hand at the square foot procedures Mel describes in his book.

The wife (of 53 years) and I live in central Texas where most winters are very mild and most summers are very hot.  I'm in my 72nd year.

I also putter about with woodworking, leather working, writing, and lately I've taken up tying paracord.

I will be putting 4 4x4 squares over the next several weeks in hopes of getting them ready for planting in March.

glad you\'re here Rabbithutch! Do you have the ALL NEW Square Foot Gardening book? It is now on its 2nd edition as of last year, and the best news in the ALL NEW books is that there is no soil amending - you start out with Mel's Mix - the perfect mix of peat, vermiculite, and compost (at least 5 different varieties). If you don't have it yet, get it and read it before you fill up those boxes! It will save you a TON of work!

Hi Rabbithutch,and welcome!

You should still have some good gardening years in you, but at your age I bet you'd really appreciate some tabletop-style beds. Or if now, then sometime in the future.

Rabbithutch, SFG is perfect for folks who want easy gardens. Sounds like you are handy with wood so making the boxes should be easy.

PLEASE get hold of a copy of the 2013 2nd Ed. of "All New Square Foot Gardening." It is soooo much easier than the original method.

Table Top beds can be so nice to have also. I hope Gwennifer can guide you to her posts showing how her husband made the cutest TTs with 2 x 4s and cement skreet pans. Some of her photos in the growing season were filled with lush plants.

Here are Gwennifer's TT in the snow. I think each daughter picked out a color to paint them.

rabbithutch, ON NO ACCOUNT build your new beds using the edition of the SFG that you probably have, the 1981 edition.

I also had the 1981 book (purchased at a garage sale for 50p) and had it sitting on my bookshelf for years and years until about four years ago I decided to start SFGing.

Read it right through again and the day before I was going to dig up the yard I decided to look on the Internet to see if there was a newer version and thereby found this site.  It saved me a ton of work as my "lawn" was really just  a load of loose rocks, big and small, covered by a very poor layer of soil and sparse grass.

Best wishes from a Lady Geezer.

Kelejan & Sanderson - have no fear!  I already got to him, his book is ordered, and will arrive in plenty of time to read before filling.

Rabbithutch - let us know what you think of the new book when you get it!  It is an easy read (I read it in 2 days, couldn't put it down because it was December and I was STARVED FOR GREEN).  We look forward to seeing what you build and grow, by the absolutely easiest method we have found.

A Geezer Joining Empty Thank you!

Post  rabbithutch 2/9/2014, 10:15 am

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I have ordered the new SFG book and should have it this week in plenty of time before I must fill the beds.

Those table top gardens look very interesting and seem to be quite simple to build.  I'm sure that I will give them a try at some point.

Again, thank you!!

Welcome Rabbithutch!  Will be especially gratifying to watch your successes in SFGardening.  I'm a bit envious, having left Central Texas some 30 years ago, and discovered it is almost impossible to grow okra here in Western Oregon.  Saw my first okra plants gone feral behind the old ranch house we were living in between Fredricksburg and Mason.  Magical.  Keep us advised of your choices of plants for your new beds.  Nonna
