Our lettuce is doing so well! I didn't plan to have such a pretty organization of colors, it just turned out that way

Re: lettuce!!
Thanks guys CC, it was a variety pack, and I just sort of dropped seeds in a line! LOL I think it was romaine, red leaf, oak leaf, buttercrunch. They are such beautiful heads, I'm so happy!! We have about 22 heads ready, so we want to use a head a day (at least) in our smoothies. The carrots and beets are popping up really well too. I can post some other pics if you want, I hate to bore people tho! hahaCapeCoddess wrote:It IS pretty, SG! What kind of lettuce?

Re: lettuce!!
That looks wonderful! Seems almost a shame to use up such crunchiness on smoothies.
Have you thought about cut-and-come-again instead of harvesting a whole head at a time? You could wind up with a bigger and longer-lasting harvest overall. Instead of 1 head a day for 22 days, 1 leaf from every plant for ... a long time!

That's what I do and I ate off of my lettuce literally all year around, even through the summer and our temps are over 100 most of the summer.Marc Iverson wrote:That looks wonderful! Seems almost a shame to use up such crunchiness on smoothies.

By picking baby greens, somehow I managed to keep most of the lettuce from getting bitter. I pick it every 2 or 3 days. I've found I can plant 2 to 3 times as densely since they plants aren't getting large.
Re: lettuce!!
Yes marc, we do that too We have other lettuces and spinaches coming up too, so we need to keep on eating! It's working out pretty well. Can't wait for the woodchips to keep breaking down, and see if we can get things to grow a little faster. My hubby loves romaine, so he does the cut and come again on thoseMarc Iverson wrote:That looks wonderful! Seems almost a shame to use up such crunchiness on smoothies.

Re: lettuce!!
thank you Marc. Hopefully, this will be the time we get a good head! Our onions are doing REALLY well. We planted the Georgia Sweets again, after such a good year last year, and also some Maui onions. We planted from the tiny plants about 6 weeks ago?? they're so thick, you can barely see the soil! Can't wait

Re: lettuce!!
Those lettuce seedlings are so pretty SG. I would like to try the drunken frizzy headed lettuce that Boffer grows...... Boffer what is it called again? And where did you get the seed>?

Drunken Woman Frizzy Headed...yes, I tried it just because of the name! But it's become one of my standards for the last couple years. I get it from Territorial

It grows fairly quickly, slow to bolt, rarely bitter, the leaves have some substance to them, and the reddish/purplish color in the leaves seem to vary depending on temperature, which makes them interesting to watch.
