I hope people think I am being too chatty with all of my posts, but here comes another.

Many of us do nothing but the SFG, and many of us do both the SFG and traditional gardening. A traditional garden is one where annuals, perennials, small bushes, and vegetables are grown, with or without garden rows for picking or harvesting. This could be a crude way of measuring the popularity and acceptance of the SFG versus the traditional garden. I have 32 square feet of SFG and about 800 square feet of traditional garden. So my proportion is :

1 to 25 (800 divided by 32 is 25)

P.S.
I started my TG much sooner than the SFG, so in my case it is a matter of which was begun first, not which method I prefer.

20 x 9 plus a bit more of ANSFG & a now dedicated garlic bed of approx. 20 sq. feet .
 Say a total of += 220 sq. feet .
Three individual quite separate ANSFG 6 sq. feet beds soon to be enclosed in  for two grape vines and one giant  thorn less black berry = 6 sq. ft.
Soon to be  .....  a dedicated 36 inch high ANSFG raised bed solely for Asparagus of  about = 36 sq feet
185 ft. traditional gardening hopefully soon to be 10 off  x 9 sq. ft.  36 inch high raised beds with anything not enclosed in brickwork laid to an easy cut lawn.= 90 sq. ft.

So hopefully an eventual grand total of around  350 feet sq. ft. by July 2014 .

Then we also have
About 36 sq. ft. of  traditional  flower beds as front garden borders to the front lawn

24 sq. ft. of comfrey for compost making along the front of the garden front wall grown  as a green wall hider for most months of the year.

I guess that is around a proportion of about six ANSFG sq. ft. to one of traditional garden

Brief Survey: Proportion of Areas of SFG to Traditional Garden Empty Re: Brief Survey: Proportion of Areas of SFG to Traditional Garden

I started out with a 32 ft x 32 ft traditional vegetable garden.  The soil was hard red georgia clay.  It was almost impossible to till it with a tiller is was so hard.

I now have the following SFG's
2  - 4' x 4'  = 32 sq ft
3  - 3' x 8'  = 72 sq ft
8  - 2' x 2'  = 32 sq ft
2  - 4' x 8'  = 64 sq ft
1  - 2' x 8'  = 16 sq ft
8  - wine barrels  = approx 32 sq ft
Total SFG square feet = 248

I still have one long traditional row (now a bed) that I am slowly adding peat, vermiculite and compost to improve the soil.  It is 4' x 32' or 128 sq feet.

So my vegetable garden is 66% SFG and 34% traditional.

Front yard is 100% traditional.  Back yard is 100% traditional hardscape with 59 sq ft of SFG boxes tucked here and there for veggies.
