Introduce Yourself
Hi,
My name is Darryl Whitham and I am a new Square Foot Gardener. I originally started my gardening hobby with Earthboxes, but slowly but surely will move to all SFGs. I just set up my first 2X2 SFG about a week ago (fall crops) and all of my seeds have just about sprouted. I decided to keep my first SFG on my back deck because of the southern exposure and easy protection from the wild animals and my dogs.
I have read the entire SFG book straight through and decided that this is the way I would like to go due to the organic characteristics and use of homemade compost. I love the idea of not needing to buy fertilizer and garden lime ever again.
I just purchased a 4X4 cedar raised bed that will be used in the spring. I can't wait to load that up with organic, heirloom crops.
Happy to have converted to the SFG method and I believe that I am a SFG fanatic now...
Regards,
Darryl

Re: Introduce Yourself
Welcome. Did you buy compost for your first mix or did you already have some home-made on hand? I had problems with nutrient levels my first year with purchased, bagged compost (poor quality).

Re: Introduce Yourself
I planted Swiss Chard, Radishes, Romaine Lettuce and Winter Kale. The compost components (5 different composts) were purchased from a garden center. My Zone in Virginia is 7a.
Thanks for the quick reply and great information....

Darryl, Welcome to the Forum!
I'm a first year gardener using SFG and I think this Forum is an excellent place for information and help. Lots of good folks.

Re: Introduce Yourself
Thanks to all for welcoming me to the forum..I will have lots of questions, until hopefully I become a resident SFG expert.
