Pickles My first batch!
Hi all Its been a busy summer I haven't had allot of time for the internet, witch I suppose is a good thing. This is my first batch of non refrigerator pickles going in the brine for 24 hrs.
I already have 5 jars of refrigerator pickles and decided, if I'm going to have any room in the fridge I'd better figure out how to make pickles I can store elsewhere.

Wow that looks like a great harvest. At the community garden where I garden, cucumbers haven't grown much at all. My husband mentioned to me just last week that we should pickle cucumbers for pickles. I have never grown them before but they are on the list for next year now.

Re: Pickles My first batch!
Ok, so here it is my first batch of store it on the shelf instead of in the fridge Pickles!
The white one is actually a white cucumber I planted 1 vine and we have only gotten 3 fruits from it and they have all been just golf ball sized.
We have had an odd season this year, in the past we have had a not so great crop of Pumpkin or Cucumber and this year they have both taken off. The past two years we have only averaged two Pumpkins and 20 or 30 Cucumbers this year we have about 20 Pumpkins and the Cucumbers are still coming on. I will probably get 6 or 7 more bottles by the end on the season. My Tomatoes were severely stunted by the 20 days of triple digit temperatures and my corn didn't really produce either, we only got about 6 edible cobs out of 48 stalks.

First Dills...
So, I am doing a 2 day version of dills with gifted cukes. I sliced them in half lengthwise, spooned out most of the seeds. Cut them into vertical spears. They are brining in the fridge. I don’t know what I’m doing, but I am following the Ball book, with the exception of the shape of the cukes and the removal of the seed area...
Fingers crossed: Tomorrow is the thing!

OK, so weird thing happened, some of the cukes got frozen???? They were translucent, clearly wobbly and frozen...ditched those. Left me with 2 quarts worth of cukes of questionable condition!
Did it anyways! Rainy day, nothing going on. We will see how they turn out!

I garlicked them up a bit, since I love garlic and have a ton! Called a pal when the “Frozen” thing happened, so we decided to open for Christmas and see how they taste!
