Drying Herbs in the Microwave

King Arthur Flour has a tutorial on drying herbs in your microwave. This method does not work for all types of herbs, but is a major timesaver for those that it does work for! And the herbs retain their color too, which is pretty cool. Be sure to read through the comments on the blog entry for great tips from those who have actually tried it as you'll get additional info. I usually dry mine outdoors in the air/sun dehydrators. I am definitely going to try the microwave method. Would be great during the winter.

I harvested some basil last week and dried all the leaves in the toaster oven at 150 degrees for 10 minutes then let them stay in the heat (took a few hours total) in four cycles of 10 minutes each. Keeping the leaves raised off the pan seemed to help.

I just finished drying all my oregano and thyme. I set my oven at the lowest setting, 170F for my oven, and dry for two hours. Works like a charm. I do the same for basil.

I tried the microwave method this week. Celery leaves, oregano, and basil. Really works!

I've also used the oven method and it works, also. Just that it uses a lot of electricity.

The cheapest to use are my outdoor dehydrators.
