Dear Mel,

The information in new edition is still thin on what to trim and how. I could use some good diagrams or pictures showing me what I am supposed to cut, or not cut, on different vertical crops. There is pretty good info for tomatoes, but I'm not as sure on the melons, squash (summer and winter) and cucumbers. (Comments on thinning/grooming other plants for better yield also would be good.)

Hi, Maria

Here are a couple of recent SFG Forum topics regarding pruning for vertical growth:

Spacing for vertical summer squash

vertical Zuchini

I know there are more but they get inserted in other topics when someone goes off-topic.  Embarassed

There are some good videos on uTube regarding pruning and growing vertical. Some are so good that you can get an "Ah, ha" moment.  One was from England in a row garden, not SFG.  But his explanation on pruning vertical summer squash was educational.  I typed in "vertical garden" on uTube to learn all I could during the winter.  That's where I found the SFG method!  And John Kohler (sp).

I have tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash and 2 cantelopes trained vertically.  Also an 8'+ Roma!  I stopped suckering / pruning it at 2 feet when I found out it was a short, bushy type [determinant], and it went crazy!

Hopefully, others will reply with more sites for you to visit.

While Mel is a member of the forum, he is not active here. You may have better luck with a response from him on his personal blog.

That sounds great, sanderson! I'd love to try that with some pattypan squashes I'm trying (while running out of bed space).

Just make sure you have strong, steady support for heavier climbers. Best of luck!
