I think it would be interesting to see the varieties of tomatoes everyone is growing in their gardens in 2014--so rapid fire, what are you growing?

I'm growing:
Sungold
Black Krim
Purple Bumble Bee
Golden Monarch
Celebrity
Wisconsin 55
Black and Brown Boar
2 different dwarf varieties in 5 gallon buckets
Test Tomato (seed from a store bought yellow round cherry tomato (this seed was from our 4 year old's mouth--he spit it out after we sowed our tomato seeds at the end of March and asked if we could plant it--it's grown and about to flower))

Did you make the Sweet 100 x Brandywine yourself or is that a purchased variety?  Have you grown it before?

2014 Tomatoes Empty tomatoes on Kauai

Post  kauairosina 5/27/2014, 10:50 pm

Kewalo (pronounced Kavalo) created by University of Hawaii, Principe Borghese and a bunch of volunteers that I have no idea what they are.  I hope some are Sun Gold.  Cut worms got my first Kewalos.  I've saved some towel rolls to see if I can deter them next planting (after this Saturday when hopefully I will pick up new plants at the Sunshine market.)

Yes, I am the saucy type! The cross is a purchased variety - got it from TomatoFest. Just had to try that one!

I planned to only have 8 tomato plants this year.  The best laid plans................

Lemon Boy
German Queen
Red Beefsteak
Black Krim
Sun Sugar cherry

All Bonnie Starts

2 San Marzano from purchased seed
1 Sungold - I hope.  I found a yellow cherry tomato skin with seeds just starting to sprout when weeding a bed.  I brought it inside and put some of the seeds into cups of MM.  Got 3 seedlings, gave 2 to my son and kept 1.

5 volunteers  1 next to the cuke trellis, 1 next to a butternut squash trellis and 3 I moved to buckets.  I know I will be planting more cukes when the peas play out so I'm leaving that one there.  Can't decide whether to leave the one next to the squash.

I also have 3 volunteers in a cup in the kitchen that came from the strawberry bed. Thing is,  this was where the Great White beefsteak was growing on a cattle panel last year.  I moved the cattle panel and it has pumpkins growing on it now but can't decide if I want to buy another panel and take a chance this great tomato is one of the volunteers.  Or plant 2 in with the peas knowing I'll be replacing the peas with cukes soon and 1 in a bucket.  I didn't plan to buy another cattle panel this year.

  DECISIONS!!!!!

I was late getting back home this year and didn't get my tomatoes started in time, so I was going to depend on starts for sure, but couldn't find any San Mazano so took a chance on some seeds.  Then I had so many volunteers I had to throw a bunch away.

Dang, I threw away and gave away enough volunteers to start a small farm.  Wish you were closer.  I just pulled 3 more this morning.   Sad   And they all SEEM healthy.  Hope my purchased starts hang in there.

Black Cherry (1)
White Cherry (1)
Red Cherry (2)
Early Cherry (5) from seed
Roma (1) from Costco
Early Roma (5) from seed
Celebrity (6)
Beefsteak (1)
Black Krim (1)
Early Girl (1)
Pineapple (1) from Costco
Pink Lemonade (1) from Costco - I think that's the name. I also have a Pink Lemonade Blueberry bush. Getting confused.

So far most are doing pretty well and have a decent number of toms, but still green. A couple are starting to turn slightly red.  A couple of plants might be fighting off leaf curl but they are hanging in there. I moved one away from the others (pink lemonade). May need to move another one (pineapple). I have one cherry tomato plant that carried over from last year and is all bent over and curling around back up, but is productive...more than last year.

...it's fun to see all of the different toms everyone is growing.

Post  kamigh 5/28/2014, 1:15 pm

Here's what I've got:
Yellow pear (already almost 5 feet tall with tons of green tomatoes!)
San Marzano (red)
Sungold cherry (orange/yellow)
Sweet 100 cherry (red)
Tigerella (orange/red)
Green Zebra (green)
Paul Robeson (purple)
Taxi (yellow)
Arkansas Traveler (red/pink)
Golden jubilee (orange)

I started all but the Sweet 100 and Arkansas traveler from seed.  Tried to get a variety of colors but kept to smaller sizes because I've had a lot either crack or get nibbled by birds in the past. So far, so good.  I got super-excited for my first year of SFG and put everything out too early, so they had to weather some lower temps and some awful late winter/early spring winds, but none look worse for the wear at this point.  Can't wait to pop that first sun-warmed tomato in my mouth!
There was a white cherry tomato (Italian Ice) I wanted to try but couldn't bring myself to spend the $5 or so Burpee wanted for the seeds . . . anyone have that one???

For me:
3x Sweet 100's
1x Burpee Tomatoberry
1x Mr. Stripey
1x Yellow Pear

The cherrry tomatoes grow the best overall as I am a bit sun challenged -but hoping Mr. Stripey works out.

Plants just in the ground 3 weeks ago -some decent growth but a long ways to go still

I killed some (lots Wink,) of my starts so had to purchase some plants.

2x Esterina (High Mowing, a yellow cherry supposed to be more crack resistant than Sungold, a favorite)
2x Black Pear (Baker Creek, tired of poor yield from Black Cherry)
2x Jaune Flamme (a large orange cherry, supposedly great flavor)
2x Sunkist (High Mowing, an orange slicer from UNH)
2x Blue Beech (Fedco, purchased plants since I killed my Opalka starts, a paste from Blue Beech Farm in VT)
2x Juliet (purchased)
2x Big Beef (purchased)

These are still shivering in their pots since it is cold and rainy here in MA, just like last year.

Just adding the details everyone else thought of but me! All started from seed. Had 6 pots of each, gave all the others away. Could not bring myself to sacrifice any of the healthy seedlings (2-3 per pot) so I let them all grow until time to put outside. They still looked too good, so the snippings are in glasses of water taking root.

It is a Russian variety of Roma, it is red, and it is BIG! From past experience, it is approximately 3-4" diameter, with the traditional Roma shape (longer than wide, slightly pointy on the end). Excellent flavor and makes a great sauce!!!
