Veggies (green beans, onions carrots, beets). I need to buy a pressure canner to cook the beets efficiently...and check out Jimmy's thread on weaving/ hanging, drying onions.

Here's an interesting comparison of some of my onions. Onions on the right were grown in the SFG (Mels Mix). Onions on the left were grown in amended native clay loam directly adjacent to one of my SFG boxes.

wow! those are BEAUTIFUL congrats! the colors are so vibrant, almost look fake! way to go. I am experiencing the same thing with plants grown outside of my MM...bigger. Gonna try a few more experiments. Congrats on a beautiful harvest!

Thanks...I've been playing with my camera settings and found one that makes veggie colors vibrant.

It all looks fantastic, but those carrots go off the charts.

Landarch, your produce looks great! What do you attribute the difference in onions to? Are you using the original Mel's Mix?

don't know about the onions...in my SFG boxes I am using Mels Mix that is three years old...put a scoop of new home-made compost in each square this spring. Compost was made from kitchen scraps, manures (rabbit, cow, horse, chicken), coffee grounds (in bulk from Starbucks), garden scraps (beet and carrot tops), lawn clippings, and shredded leaves.

Mels mix is an artificial soil...so it's still hard to beat native Kansas clay loam. It doesn't drain as well as Mels Mix, but it holds moisture longer.

landarch: What variety of onions are they? They look a lot like our Georgia Sweets. We just pulled about 100? onions out of our front bed, got a few whoppers. Like you, our onions outside the MM were more vigorous. We also noticed the roots were much thicker and longer. Looks like yours are too. Congrats again...love it all!!

Just a question from a newbie. Would a short Top Hat help with the root needs for growing big onion?

I'm not having any luck with my spring planted onions, but I am going to leave them alone until next spring. The "onions" are only 1/4" bumps!

Good question. The roots from the onions NOT in MM didn't really go much past 6" if even that far, but they were much thicker in diameter...almost like redworm thickness vs. more hairlike from our MM onions. It must be noted tho, they were not the same variety of onions, so that MIGHT be the difference. We do have brandywine tomatoes growing in MM and not in MM, and so far, the NOT in MM seem to be more vigorous. We will see though as the season progresses.

I think I planted Texas Sweet...and I have some seed of Yellow Grannex to sow this fall...I was told Yellow Grannix is what is marketed as Vidalia.

The onions in non-Mels Mix were bigger, had nicer greens, and has twice the root system as the Mels Mix Onions.

I didn't even pick all the Mels Mix onions as thet looked too small...I'll give them a couple more weeks to see if anything happens.

I have the same experiment going, but the Brandywine outside the MM was planted later and was smaller. The outside one is in a perennial garden in composted soil mixed with Osmocote, in part shade taboot. It now looks healthier and thicker than the ones in the full sun MM.

I'm not sure what to make of that but the jury will remain out til I get some maters which neither has at this time.
