( Camp or Rooster please move this thread if needed, thanks, LM)

This darling has been curing for a couple weeks, I couldn't wait any longer, peeled off 5 layers.  Finally reached the last layer and could finally see her true color.  Is she pretty or what??  I was pleasantly surprised:

So I couldn't wait to see the cloves and sauteed one for my grill cheese sandwich, raw was too hot and spicy, sautéed was mild and full, robust with flavor.

But today I pulled a few more garlic.  A couple were smaller, then this one showed up:

 She's a tall one too:

What a lovely morning in the garden, Thanks to Mel for making gardening so enjoyable.

Check the exhibition rules of your local fair. Here, for judging, they require a sample of 3 each of the vegetable or fruit.

Thanks Donna and Bob, and Camp.  Since its my first time I'm hoping to keep it healthy for replanting in the Fall. Bob, a fair entry you say? Hadn't thought of that, thank you.  I may look up past fair winners and see if this one possibly has a chance.  Thanks for the tip Camp I will check it out.  And Bob I agree the llamas made a contribution in the home made compost.  I was very bad at fertilizing multiple times during spring so I guess the llama beans helped.  Now I wish I hadn't pulled most of the plants 2-1/2 weeks ago. Doh!

Garlic - German Red Garlic Photo-11

Hey LM, I harvested most of mine today and this one is a RUSSIAN Red.... similar size. I am also pretty excited about  "my haul"   Feels like halloween with a full bag...

I would save that one for your fall plantings, they say if you plant the biggest ones, you will eventually get a very large crop

Hey Your Russian Red looks terrific!  Way to go!  Bet your eyes opened wide when you pulled up that one.
With German Reds, I was surprised that stem thickness didn't always determine bulb size.  Seemed illogical.  But it added to the fun of harvesting. I've got about a dozen left outside and wonder if there are more surprises waiting.

I would have to say that this was not the case for me. The size of the stalk was pretty much along the same lines as the size of the bulb. I have a few musica that are also this big.
I think I could have left them in longer, but my garlic is scattered all over my garden, and it is getting hard to NOT WATER it while I am trying to water everything else like crazy. PLus I am going away next week, and so have to get the sprinkler system sorted out for while we are away.

I wouldn't feel too bad about pulling now vs. leaving them in.  Your return per planted clove has been wonderful!

Finished planting an entire new bed of garlic from this years first harvest.  Overall very happy but a little surprised at the number of cloves culled to use now for cooking since I was expecting to see perfection like the original bulbs purchased from Seed Savers.

Is this experience similar to everyone else?  I thought I was doing everything right. Maybe I'm picky since I was expecting to see more uniform large fat bulbs.

I bought a Russian Red in September from the Baker Seed Bank, Petaluma. Planted the cloves in October. They came up and then disappeared.

I'm cruising the Seed topics before I submit my order tonight or tomorrow.

One observation I have, is that my cute little garlics I planted this March or April are still in mint condition on the counter. In contrast, the store bought ones start to shrivel and get moldy within a few weeks. Must be the TLC, literally.

I still have some german red bulbs in very good condition from summer harvest.  Also have a lot that was put into a large frozen butter log with garden herbs that should last through winter and spring.  Anticipate results from a first time bed of 'free' replanted cloves this summer.

LM, Do you mean that the garlics will recover underground and grow back again? My green sprouts came up and then died. Or withered off.

Well, not recover as you said.  I meant I replanted 'free' cloves this past Autumn that developed in the summer 2013 harvest.  In all I had enough to eat fresh, store, freeze, and keep the biggest ones to re-plant a whole box of cloves this past Autumn.

The 2013 harvest originated from purchased bulbs/separated into cloves from Autumn of 2012.  And I must say I somewhat freaked out paying 18.99 plus shipping for those original 4 or 5 bulbs. I will say, at that time, they were the biggest healthiest bulbs I had ever seen.

Sorry yours died off!

Garlic Garlic Garlic wowwww how I love baked garlic
I never had it till my wife recently baked around 6 bulbs.
Man were they ever delicious, I just couldn't stop eating them.
She suggested I stop or may become ill, so I did.
In about 4 hours she couldn't stay in the same room with me, it sure didn't bother me at all.
Cant wait till another garlic roast...
Really reeks doesn't it?

Ohh, jimmy, jimmy, jimmy.  Garlic is wonderful stuff.   If you or your wife want, you can look up garlic farms that share wonderful recipes, besides all the cooking websites.
Enjoy!

I worked 3 shifts for over 30 years in a power plant.
Of those there were 2 weeks of a daylight shift.
The locker rooms were immaculate, and modern.
I was usually the 2nd person in the locker room on day shift, I enjoyed getting there, beating the rush, and having coffee before tending to the days duties.
The 1st guy there ate a full bulb of garlic every morning, I never liked being around anyone who has eaten garlic.
That locker room reeked just about all morning.
I'm sure there are others who feel the same, I know wifey does.
I love planting garlic and I sure love composting
